I love his videos, but all these issues have easy explanations and reasoning behind them and in some cases even doesn't depend on them, or it's a standard and they are only the ones blamed for it.
Things like game prices: also happened not only from other publishers, but also in other consoles for next gen games. If happened way less on Xbox/MS games is because they don't have big AAA next gen only exclusives and because MS is focused on renting instead of in selling games, an on growing GP userbase over profitability.
Regarding the game pricing, considering inflation the new big games from all the previous generations were priced way over $100.
Regarding the console pricing, in addition to the huge inflation increase, the components and shipment costs rised in recent months way more than this 10% increase. They already were losing money with the console, so now could be too much. And again, many more rised their prices, like Quest 2, smartphones or the PC GPUs.
Japan Studio wasn't shut down, it was restructured, downsized and rebranded (plus changed their leadership) after decades of unprofitable games and money pits, not being able to deliver a single big seller games. They also branched off their 2nd party team to give them their own studio and to unify it into their global 2nd party team as did years before in EU and USA.
It isn't something they do for 'being arrogant', it's only common sense.
Yes, this is what Sony said and what they are doing: PS consoles will continue being their main focus and main gaming market and they'll keep increasing their investment on console only games. All the other things like PC, mobile, movies, eSports etc. are secondary things to expand their fanbase and revenue, which as Jimbo said gets reinvested into growing their existing console game development teams and on acquiring new teams.Personally, I like the direction Sony are going in. I just hope they don’t lose focus on their core user base.
The console is still the epicentre of everything. InZone, VR, mobile, PC, TV shows, movies… I believe everything they’re doing is with a view toward growing the user base and profits will mainly be funnelled back into the console and funding more games. At least I damn well hope so, and I don’t see anything to suggest that being not the case.
