I didnt know it was unreal engine. Yes felt smooth, fast, stable and plenty shooting mechanics all done well
Yeah, it started out as EU4 but I guess with Sony's backing they were able to transition over everything. Definitely one of the most smoothest and polished online experiences I've had in years. I think the only issue I ever ran into was once during the Beta with a Memory leak which required a hard restart for the console.

Oh and Lark spores would definitely mess with the framerate just a little if an area was spammed with them lol.

Really enjoyed Returnal and its DLC. They've said it's a new IP, hopefully well on its way that we might get a tease next year.

Hi. Game dev here.

UE5 is rapidly becoming more standardized in the industry. Almost everyone is using it now, especially AAA studios, because they don't have to do any of their own maintenance on their own engine. Therefore these companies are saving the cost of developer maintenance. The amount of people also learning UE5 has rapidly accelerated, especially after the Unity Runtime fee controversy last year. And having a large pool of potential candidates for hire who know UE is something companies would not want to miss out on. Teaching new people an inhouse engine they have to get familiar with in a rapid dev cycle is not productively reliable, nor is it a good use of employee resources. Also the fact that UE has built-in features that pretty much give no hassle in terms of development and shipping games, it's really easy to get into and start making games.

So the industry is perfectly fine consolidating a massive amount of game engine power & market share to a company whose engine is proprietary, and where a sole company controls the standard?

Gamers always want to sound smart and talk about being against monopolies at the consumer market level, but couldn't care less about the same thing in areas of the industry BTS. It's why when so many people say being "pro-consumer" means going to PC, they're actually just saying "bring it to Windows". They're just too ignorant or intentionally aloof to say it.

Personally I'd never like a future where all game devs are consolidating workflows and homogenizing their creative processes upon a single game engine. There is absolutely real potential for gamers to be negatively impacted. But, we're also dealing with a group who seem to value quantity and spread of releases more than they do quality or creativity within those releases. So I can't act too surprised.

Lol I dont remember them slowing down too much. Maybe when someone is on the other end lol

They said they are done with that genre as they don't see it as economically feasible. As the sales are weak

Hmmm. I find that strange.
Maybe it just doesnt give them enough money to go be a AAA studio. There team and games were small and sold decent and they had multiple releases a year sometimes. But whatever, I guess
Im sure Returnal and AAA games are a much risky option

Maybe it was a PC thing but I definitely had two Concords friends who were playing on PC complaining about slowdowns once too many spores were around.

Hmmm. I find that strange.
Maybe it just doesnt give them enough money to go be a AAA studio. There team and games were small and sold decent and they had multiple releases a year sometimes. But whatever, I guess

Sounds like a PC issue thing.

I dont deny them saying it.

They’ve been around forever, if there games havent been paying the bills, what has lol? They wanna make big games, thats fine.

According to everyone, AAA games dont make enough money and now A-AA games dont pay the bills

Well you have to remember they were a fairly small studio with less than 70 devs when they started working on Returnal and they did get some funding from PlayStation over the years, but they almost went bankrupt in 2019 and thats when they halted their multiplatform multiplayer they were working on, and focused solely on making Returnal as Sony was covering everything and I'm sure that's how the acquisition talks started... Luckily Returnal met internal targets for them.
