Japan has a
$18.4B videogame market, out of a
~$230B global market. This means Japan represents about 8% of total expenditure.
If 78k units were representative of 8% of the total expenditure, then in total there would be 975k sales of the PS5 Pro, so less than 1 million so far.
On the other hand, there are diverging factors. In favor of the actual number being above 1 million:
- Japan hasn't really adhered into home consoles since the PS3 era.
They're mostly a handheld + PC market right now. Other (mostly western) markets will probably buy more PS5 Pro per capita. Especially in the USA where it's so much cheaper to get the console+disc drive.
In favor of being below:
- 78k units at release date might be artificially inflated by a new generation of consumer electronics scalpers that appeared during the COVID + semiconductor crisis. Many of these scalpers are now selling their consoles at MSRP or even at a loss to the same customers as retail stores, but those consoles won't appear as sales numbers again.
- There aren't really many Playstation consoles being sold outside USA + EU + Japan. China represents about 1/5th of the worldwide market but they bought less Playstation 4 consoles than Spain. Russia, Middle Eastern Countries and South American countries spend a bit on videogames but Playstation practically doesn't exist there.
If we take away the countries where Playstation has no presence, the total addressable market of USA + EU + Japan + Korea is probably around $150B, which puts Japan at ~12%,
TLDR: too early to tell, and Japan isn't a great place to read Playstation's success nowadays.
