Is the reason the PlayStation 4 sold worse than PS3 in Japan is because it had the number "4" in it?

Colin Moriarty is someone who is deeply moronic but pretends he is smart.

The PS4 did worse than the PS3 because the PS3 didn't live up to many people's expectations in Japan.

All the best selling games on PS3 were driven by the West.

There was a lagging impact on PS4, especially with games hitting the 3DS instead of PlayStation.

Colin gets ideas in his head doesn't investigate his thoughts and runs with them thinking he is brilliant.

I watched the podcast where he thought Ragnarok was a PS5 exclusive... He isn't that tuned into what is going on.

PS gradually got more and more western each generation. Specially during the HD era.

That has nothing to do with PlayStation and more to do with collapse of Japanese developers during the HD era.

They almost all declined. FromSoftware was the only one who came out on top.

And I still think that is because they were slow to embrace engines and were still building engines specifically for individual games.

No it’s the price and chucking your games on PC making it even less desirable.

You're entirely unaware of the stock issues in Japan I'm guessing?
I'm guessing the stock issues are a mix of Japan retailers not wanting to sold on to PlayStation products and Sony themselves not confident in shipping more there and to be honest they are probably right. imagine if Monster Hunter Wilds comes to switch 2 shortly after the PS5 and PC launch in Japan, would take wind out of any momentum PS5 could get next year unless if Japan really, really wants GTA VI

That's a massive guess that doesn't add up much.

The PS5 was selling TOO well in Japan and they increased the price. They didn't increase the price because they weren't confident in shipping units there.

There are 6 million PS5s in Japan right now but the software sales are shit. Why is that? Digital sales and free to play are a factor too but simply there aren't 6 million PS5s in Japan right now. At one point the exchange rate was favorable so people were reselling them abroad for profit. Daniel Ahmad confirmed it recently in a Q&A on the Install Base forum

EDIT: an amazing thread on Twitter with more irrefutable factual evidence

And what?

This has happened since time immemorial in all console generations.

I purchased a new N64 and PS2 from Japan off a Japanese private seller.

It is still a sale.

Bet you’re one who thinks PS Portal sales are being counted as PS5 sales too.

Honestly you have too much time on your hands.

Of course a console resold somewhere else still count for the total sold worldwide but they don't count for Japan. If you looked at the photos and you still want to say that nothing weird was going on you're simply in denial.

Japan always had a preference for portable compared to other regions, which in general also meant that in Japan mobile gaming grown more than consoles and particularly home consoles. PC market also grew more than consoles in Japan.

Maybe as part of it PS sales declined over time. But well, PS5 is selling better than PS4, so apparently they are recovering at least a bit.

There are 6 million PS5s in Japan right now but the software sales are shit.
PS software sales increased, what decreased are the phisical copies. Because the percent of digital kept growing over time.

Nonsense.

The only thing that counts is the original point of sale. Which is Japan in this case. What the Japanese do with them is irrelevant.

How else can you monitor console sales?

What next? Don’t count scalper sales and start counting who bought from them.

You are using a metric to count sales which has never existed and never will.
