I wonder if ps5 can cross 4 million in Japan before ff16 comes out? Anyone know what the installed base of PS4 was when ff15 came out in 2016?

The Switch is still killing it damn... I dont really agree with the love but its true. It must be the hightest selling machine in Japan history games wise.

At least there is 2 PS5 titles in the top 10. Sony needs to do more to target the audience in Japan. Street Fighter and Final Fantasy in the next Month. They need a Dragon Quest and some more classics and niche games

It's even worse outside of Japan when it comes to the Nintendo player base. With very few exception it's pretty much all about Nintendo.

I remember now some MS Japan related quotes from a couple years ago like this one:
https://www.gamereactor.eu/phil-spencer-the-fastest-growing-market-for-xbox-is-japan/

"The fastest growing market for Xbox is Japan - Phil Spencer"
If im not mistaken he trotted that one out the last interview he had as well. Microsoft is losing ground in the US and UK to playstation while sony is gaining ground in those markets, maintaining other markets they do well in, and expanding to new ones like China and India with their "Hero" developer initaives.

What I remember that he mentioned in the most recent interview regarding Japan was that he was happy to see that Minecraft for Switch was in the top 4 in the best selling retail game sales of Japan.

Yes. One of the goals of Sony is growing in markets like Asia via different initiatives:
  • Partnering with devs and publishers from there for 3rd party console exclusives of all kinds. Not only the ones they have with Capcom, Square, Konami or ARC System Works, but also with people from other Asian countries outside of Japan like MiHoyo
  • Investing in companies from there like FromSoft or Kadokawa
  • Partnering with more Asian devs, not only from Japan, for 2nd party exclusives like Death Stranding 2, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Lost Soul Aside etc.
  • Made a record investment for the PS5 generation regarding 2nd and 3rd party exclusives, which it's fair to assume that will mean more Asian exclusives than before
  • Supporting and nurturing Asian indies from both PlayStation Indies and the China/India Hero projects
  • Since unlike in the rest of the world in Asia they play mostly mobile and PC and (outside Japan) almost not consoles, they acquired Lassengle, the Japanese developer who made them the super successful Fate/Order mobile game (which generated to Sony over a Billion per year) and Savage (people who worked on leading mobile games), strengthened their PC business making ports of big games and acquiring Nixxes for the ports, and is starting to build a SIE team for mobile gaming and is working on partnerships with key mobile devs
All these initiatives are long term bets that will secure them a big growth, and not only in Asia.

These are just physical sales; I'm sure digital purchases in Japan is much higher on PlayStation than Switch since the PlayStation systems actually have the wifi (& ethernet) built-in good enough to support digital downloads, not to mention much more storage on PS4 and both more storage & vastly faster storage of PS5.

Those factors alone push software purchases to be likely heavily physical for the Switch, while I suspect a lot of PS4/5 games are making up for lower physical sales with at least decent digital software sales that the Famitsu charts don't track. But, having more data on digital sales for PlayStation platforms in Japan would be nice to ascertain this for sure.
