Maybe fire people at Bungie for canceling the game?

This reads like old news.

Jason Schriere loves to editorialize shit like this and because he actually has good sources and does good journalism with the main talking points people buy into everything else he says.

Reminds me of the “sony chasing blockbusters is causing discord in the sony empire” story, and how many times he backpedaled on points he made in it along with the guys at Bend.

People act like he’s the standard of professionalism. He’s literally on twitter and places like resetera insulting people and getting into petty beefs with devs every other day.

pretty sure it was their own idea

Doubt it, shifting the studio to become a trend chaser in gaas space that just so happened to coincide with PlayStation’s larger push for gaas? Who the hell went to work on Naughty Dog hoping to land gaas experience? Someone put a carrot on a stick.

It got pushed into being a separate game because naughty dog were already a a year past their scheduled release date of 2018 for TLOU2 and they knew they couldn’t ship part 2 with a multiplayer mode before the ps5 launched. So they cut it, and instead of just putting out some standard multiplayer (which they should have done in hindsight) that only few people would play they wanted to expand the world of TLOU with new story content that you can only get through proper live service. This would take less pressure off having to put out a part 3 right away.

The guy who was directing it was a big TLOU online fan actually so they did have a team that were passionate about doing it.

The problem with these “enthusiast bubbles” is that they assume everyone in the industry hates multiplayer when it’s probably the opposite. Generations of gamers grew up wiht console multiplayer at this point that are now working in the industry. Not everyone wants to make linear action games.

It's easier than this: as usual in gamedev when working on TLOU2 shit got out of scope and got delayed a handful times. At some point couldn't delay it more and had to decide, and they decided to spend their remaining resources on the SP mode to don't have another delay more, and move the MP mode to become its own standalone MP game.

That meant that some ideas that were going to be cut in the MP to have it on time now were going to be achievable and were going to be allowed to go beyond them. Something a dev loves.

Regarding GaaS, nowadays to make a MP only game is basically aquivalent. Not only at Sony, but everywhere. So when ND decided to turn it into a standalone game for the reasons mentioned above, they knew it was going to be a GaaS. Not because chasing any trend, but because they were turning the MP game into a standalone MP game.

Would be a waste to throw it in the trash I can imagine they gonna salvage the work and put it in LoU3.

Personally glad ND strayed away from turning into a new Bungie, but just the way they handled it by showing artwork and it's going to be shown soon etc. Make people wait for years and cancel it abruptly, not a good look.
They could have resolved this and gain goodwill from the community by putting the mode in LoU2 remaster but you can't recoup the cost as much since most people would upgrade for 10..

They will probably salvage a lot of the assets/maps for part 3

That development/money doesn’t just vanish into thin air

Kinda agree. Can't remember the other guy's name, something starting S, maybe he was the glue and best of them all.

Hmmm maybe Bruce? Bruce was great.

But gameplay/combat wise TLOU2 had big enough improvements to show they are still advancing in quality

TL;DR: Naughty Dog are fkkd this gen WRT a new mainline SP game that isn't a potentially rushed Uncharted.

We won't see anything truly new from them in the AAA SP space until PlayStation 6. A cork-up of studio management when it comes to priorities, seems like.
If the current project goes well. Potentially, it could get worse.
Now that it's taking forever for their new game, they should completely avoid anything that could brings any negativity. Any woke or bullshit will probably end their legacy.
