Well the MC dropped a point to 90; it seems like ArsTechnica's review is the one that did it. Reads like a 7/10. The weird part is they're complaining about the game for being...too much of a superhero game? I mean...that's what anyone playing Spiderman 2 would be expecting, no? Their review also complains about there being...too much variety in mission structure?
It sounds like the reviewer wanted nothing but high-octane missions one right after the other, but doesn't care for breathers in-between. Even the best action movies have moments of calm and sometimes take their time to build up to the action itself. Aliens and Terminator 2 are great examples of this. I wonder how the reviewer of the game at Ars feels about that variety in those types of movies (or pacing thereof).
Anyway, how many games do the VGAs nominate for GOTY? Looks like it's six. Well, so far the clear runners for GOTY are TOTK, Baldur's Gate 3, Spiderman 2, Resident Evil 4 Remake and Super Mario Wonder. That sixth spot could be anyone. If Super Mario RPG Remake does really well critically, I think it'll just take Wonder's spot, so it'd come down to Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy for that nomination. By all accounts, Hogwarts SHOULD get the nomination, but I think Geoff is going to be charitable (and also want to avoid certain controversy with Harry Potter) and pick the safer choice in Starfield.
Because if it doesn't get nominated for GOTY, there isn't really anything else Starfield can get a nomination for aside from Best RPG, which it will have an 80% chance of losing to FF XVI in, 90% chance losing to Super Mario RPG Remake in, and 100% chance losing to Baldur's Gate 3 in. Oh, and if TOTK is also treated as an RPG, it's got a 100% chance of losing to that game as well.
At this point the VGAs are gonna have to make another category for Starfield to win, like "Best Space Game" or "Best New IP" (actually they may already have that category) because realistically there's nothing else it's going to have a chance to win, and it'd only get nominated for two categories it's 100% set to lose against better competition. I don't even think it'll win fan-voted GOTY unless Xbox & Bethesda fanatics game the votes. But then they'll get the votes discounted like what happened to Sonic Frontiers last year.
Sad reality for Starfield TBH.
