This post is based on analysis of leaked GTA 5 source code files.

The game was likely never in active development for the Nintendo Switch, but rather for the NX (console codename) based on pure hardware speculation. The Project was probably frozen after the revelation that the NX would use ARM.

Pic 1: Imgur: Stating that NX64 is the Nintendo Switch

Pic 2: Imgur: Random piece of code using NX64

Pic 3: Imgur: More references to the name NX64

Pic 4: Imgur: NX64 with other platforms

The number of mentions of the name "Nintendo Switch" are extremely small (2), compared to the number of references to the console's codename (NX64). Some elements were ported and adjusted for the NX64, but nothing concrete that the game would be running on ARM.

The RAGE ENGINE was ported to ARM64 with the release of Red Dead Redemption 1 for the Nintendo Switch. As GTA 5 runs on top of the RAGE ENGINE, it would be a waste of time to try running GTA 5 on the Switch before the Engine itself. More references were found to Stadia (YETI) (x86) than the name "Nintendo Switch".

Any post claiming that GTA 5 was or is in development for the Nintendo Switch is completely based on hopium.

If the mention of a platform name in the source code meant that the game was in development for that platform, GTA 5 was in development for the Macintosh.

That would not be surprising, the games would sell there, which is just additional revenue from old games over even more years.
In general I expect developers/publishers to be more ready for the Switch successor regardless of the actual configuration of the device.
Loads of 3rd parties sort of wrote off the Switch after the Wii U debacle and a lot of them were/are playing catch up.

Where it’s at.
The PS3 and 360 have a better and more powerful cpu than the switch.
Exactly.

Rockstar probably prototyped a Switch build and found the performance was unacceptable, which is not hard to believe when you consider how many Switch-only games have major performance problems, even first-party ones.

Well makes sense for them. Though I don't see the point in giving them GTA V on the next Switch unless it's the single player portion only.

Some people make the mistake of comparing RDR1 with GTA5 as if they were the same thing, whereas GTA5 is much heavier and more complicated, and when you think about it, even GTA4 wasn't released on Switch, even though it's less complex than the 5th.

It could end up on Switch 2 but I am pretty sure this leak is from an old version of the game, old enough to predate Switch 2 final specs and private rollout.

GTA IV is a pretty messy codebase, apparently. Red Dead Redemption has a lot less going on game-wise than GTA IV or V does, which likely made porting to the Switch much more direct than a GTA would have been.

My brother in law brought his home for the kids at Christmas and honestly that thing does suck... He was so proud of it, this is kind of sad.
