Now mainstream media can't be trusted who do you turn to for unbiased industry info?

I have a handfull of YT channels I follow for industry and game critical items:

Doctor Disaster: Well spoken with some nice little jabs and humor.

Vara Dark: Well informed, critical and savvy

Hypnotic: Outspoken, doesn't beat around the bush

And my favorite, purely for the way he talks and his accent:
Mannix: Doesnt post weekly but its just funny and on point.
"This game looks like a 10 year old took a crayon, dipped it in rabbit piss and started scribbling as fast as he could."
"Now they try to please some blue haired activist who sniffs glue all day!"

I've been watching MBG and Under The Mayo for way longer than I perhaps should (for my mental stability). Good shit though

If i didn't trust major news outlets why would i trust random youtubers
they're even less credible

I get my video game news from one place: Gematsu
They don't publish reviews, opinion articles, or anything like that. They only publish announcements and news with a general focus on Japanese games. They're pretty cool.
"But trisha, where do you go if you want to find out if a game is good or not?"
I look at gameplay footage and then if it looks interesting I buy it and determine if its good or not for myself.

No they are totally not.

The ones I named have a proven track record and have no developer ties like IGN and other outlets do. They have nothing to lose and I trust them more then any news website when it comes to games because they dare to speak up and stir hornet's nests. Less credible..... If anything they are WAY MORE credible.

Of course there are YT channels which are total BS, yes I agree.

Gematsu isnt any better. They just don't dare to talk about DEI. Like this problem doesn't exist. In my opinion that's also an integrity problem.

Now, thatdarkplace.com IS talking about everything going on in the industry. THATS integrity.

Now you have to prove your statement.
*open Doctor Distaster channel*
*most recent video starts out complaining about people buying Dragon Quest III HD-2D because of woke*
*links to Twitter to talk call out games for muh wokeness and muh DEI*
GREAT START
TOTALLY CREDIBLE SOURCE OF RELIABLE INFORMATION

Gematsu doesn't talk about *anything* opinion related
They don't talk about anything other than news because you should be able to form your own opinions on things instead of begging people to tell you what you want to hear. They are a non-biased news source.

Exactly! Calling out problems in the industry like any fucking news outlet should do. Instead of playing the "everything is fine" mentality when it's clearly not.

DEI in it's current form is indeed a problem. I rather trust him then shill/bribed sites which now dominate the gaming news landscape and give forced DEI infested trope 9s or 10s.

I do agree about your Gematsu take though after some contemplation. They choose to focus on non-political gaming news and perhaps that's a good thing.

I'm reminded of a Reddit thread by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier with some information about the steps behind journalism.

The next time you see a rumor or a report, whether it's a reputable news outlet or some random Twitter insider, ask yourself what they know and how they might know it.

While it can be tempting to turn to Youtube, Tiktok or other social media personalities for your news, it's important to remember these people are entertainers, not journalists.

The ownus for confirming sources, or otherwise validating that they're conveying the truth is not held to the same pedigree as major news outlets like Reuters, Bloomberg, Washington Post, etc.

ign, kotaku, etc, etc. Aren't ran by journalists either. I trust Vara Dark and Hypnotic more then any access media site as they've all been caught shilling and blatantly lying lately. All for a little bag of corporate cash and fomo on future freebies from devs/ publishers.
There is no integrity left.

Vara and Hypnotic always look at things from a gamers perspective and report on it. The good and the bad. That's journalism.
I've been a reviewer for a few years back in the 2000's. I know the prerequisites for proper reporting. I got blasted by many publishers for bashing their games. I couldn't care less. It's about properly informing the consumer. Not throwing out your feelings when a game doesn't sync with your views.

Rate it for its own merits. Free or bias. If Jason showed us anything, he's as incompetent as they come. His words are nothing.

So no, I don't agree at all. If you can call a shill a journalist, you can call a youtuber a journalist. Its just the way the world works right now.
At least Youtubers don't beat around the bush since they have no connections to said devs/ publishers.

And of all people you could choose, you chose Jason fucking Schreier. The idiot that ran Kotaku into the ground and ran off to Bloomberg and thought he was "Owning the chuds" Yeah that's some quality journalism right there.

Where is the integrity and transparancy that ALL journalists should abide to? Yeah, down the shitter.

Yeah, about Schreier... COME ON!!!!!

You couldn't possibly have picked anything better to prove my point.

As if you didn't rely on reviews to inform you back in the glory days? That's why.

If you're talking about industry mags then yeah I read the only available industry media at the time like anyone else to keep informed as to what was going on in the landscape. Trust seems like an unnecessary factor in this process.

Journalists are not without bias. Nobody is, unconscious or otherwise.

My intention is not to shame, or deride you from listening to or following social media personalities. I trust as a fellow adult, you're capable of extracting facts from opinion. Though, I personally recognize this line becomes increasingly blurred from some outlets of information.

I hope you'll reconsider your general stance on larger news outlets. While you did not list them specifically, I hope you'll not blanketly discredit major news outlets like Reuters, Bloomberg, Washington Post, Associated Press, etc. who report not only on gaming, but many other stories as well.

I feel very fortunate to live in a country protected by the First Ammendment, and despite the flaws which exist, I'm grateful for the freedom of press and all the hard working journalists who report on world and industry events.
