Octopath Traveler 2 isn't on more platforms due to an internal decision Square Enix made "after observing the sales of other titles"

The first Octopath Traveler isn't available on PlayStation platforms, but its sequel is. Why did you decide to make Octopath Traveler II a multiplatform release?

Takahashi:
Of course we have heard all the Octopath Traveler fans out there asking for a PlayStation release and the team also wanted to challenge ourselves to try to get the game on as many platforms as possible. Apart from that, we made the decision internally after observing the sales of other titles.

Have you thought about releasing the first game on PlayStation?

Takahashi:
We did look into it. However, we wanted to focus all our efforts on developing Octopath Traveler II and this also links in to your next question about whether you need to have played the first game to enjoy Octopath Traveler II or not.

To reduce misunderstandings about this, we decided against trying to align a PlayStation release of Octopath Traveler with the release of Octopath Traveler II.

Do you think players can dive into Octopath Traveler II without playing the first game?

Takahashi:
Yes, I very much do think they can dive into the series from Octopath Traveler II. Octopath Traveler II is set in a completely new world and is not linked to the story of the first game in any way, so players can be reassured that they can start from Octopath Traveler II without missing anything.

As implied in the title, this is a game about travelling and enjoying a journey. We felt that it was essential to set the game in a completely new world in order to give the player that feeling of excitement and anticipation when exploring it, wondering what lies down the next path or who could be living in the next town.

Yet we'll still have conspiracy theories blaming Playstation every time Xbox misses out on something.

On a side note, I still think Sony need to pick up Square to help secure their foothold in Japan given the way this industry is looking to change.

That was pretty obvious.
The first game on Xbox was a bad decision.

They need now asap to release the first game on PS5 before I can play the second game.
Apparently, this one and the first one have zero connection in terms of the plot and world.

I know but there is the differences... gameplay mechanics that you realize when you play it in order.
It is not fun to play sequels without play the previous game even when they are set in different plot/world/period.

At least that is how I play games...

Had they released the first one on PlayStation instead of Xbox not only that one would've sold a lot more but so would the second one as well.

Xbox is where franchises go to die (Ninja Gaiden, Lost Odyssey, Lost Planet, Blue Dragon, The Last Remnant, Alan Wake,Tomb Raider, Dead Rising and Titanfall), it just isn't a healthy environment for publishers to grow their IP. Games hit Xbox, people don't buy/play it and the franchise is now set up to fail/struggle.

It also happens to MS own IPs, anything outside of Forza/Halo/Gears dies quickly and even those are struggling now.

But.... I was told all over Twitter that Sony paid for these games to skip Xbox and that these games would sell a bazillion copies on Xbox.

Did Timdog lie?

Did Kidsmoove not get it right?

Yeah this is the narrarive they continually spin, atleast we have a receipt now that actually there are publishers who don't see the Xbox platform as worth the effort. Which most of us have suspected to be the case.

I am kind of flabbergasted that the first game is listed for 60 bucks on Xbox. Why would anyone with gamepass blow 60 bucks on an old school jRPG? It is still listed for 60 on Switch too. 4 year old low tech game. I suspect that is at least part of the reason why it is not selling amazing.

Huh. You have one company not trying to sell 1 niche game that has also has 2, maybe 3 other high profile PS5 exclusives this year as proof they don't see the competing platform as worth the effort. Square is absolutely getting some incentive not to publish their biggest games on Xbox. They would be foolish not to be. So no this is not a solid example of a publisher not seeing MS's platform as worth the effort, this is a publisher that has their biggest games paid not to come to the other platform and spinning this choice in a way that is favorable. Square has a vested interest in people choosing PS5 over Xbox because their biggest games are on that platform exclusively.

This doesn't mean I think Xbox is not struggling, I just see the arguments in this thread as missing context.

Nobody is denying that there are games that aren't coming to xbox because of incentives. The point is nutty xbox fanboys think every game that doesn't come is because sony money hatting, we even saw the same thing with octopath traveller 2, and this just shows that isn't always the case.

The last biggest Square Enix game on Xbox sold weel?
JRPGs not selling on Xbox is not from now but it become aggravated with Gamepass.

For example FFXVI will sell what on Series? Before I cloud expect from like 5 million units around 1 million to be Xbox but now with Gamepass I believe Square will be luck to sell 500k units on Xbox for each 5 million units of that game.

Is it worth to work in a big AAA game to sell less than 500k units in a platform?

MS themselves are killing their gaming business trying to find a new business that will probably won't pay off 🤷‍♂️
Right now this is being one of the worst Xbox console in terms of sales... behind 360 and XB1.
