Sony is trash, they pissed off a lot of fighting game fans by not allowing “unofficial” fight sticks to be used on PS5. Pretty much forcing people to buy overpriced licensed equipment, or do annoying work around. A lot of people left to pc because of that.

It’s crazy that you can play PS5 1st party games on PC with an Xbox controller, but you can’t play them with a PS4 controller on PS5….

You can even download those games for free on release day and Sony is unbothered by it. On PlayStation they argue everything they do, like limiting third-party peripherals is for security reasons.

So the game isn’t on PS4, it means Steam’s share is only 14% higher than PS5 which is at 59M. Imagine PS5 at 100M.

Tekken had a lot of input delay on PlayStation 4 and was worse when playing online.

The experience on consoles is much better this generation, but those PC players remained on PC going into Tekken 8.

Knowing how Tekken 8 is full of pluggers, it wouldn't surprise me that many of them love the PC version because of cheats.

The method used to figure is looking at replays, which isnt that reliable.

How many people play Tekken and where are most of its fans located?

Honest question because I have no idea how popular Tekken is. Could it be that Tekken is very popular in countries that have no PSN, for example?

PC is the future of all traditional gaming at the current pace, too bad it doesn't translate to many more PCs sold, indicating that the market is shrinking pretty fast.

This is not surprising, PC in general has gotten more and more shares of fighting games with crossplay being the default and the input delay usually being the best on PC. There's also costume mods.
Anyone who's a super sweaty is more likely to play on PC and play ranked.

There's some metholody issue since this is only ranked play.
The amount of copies sold is probably closer between PC and PS if you add the amount of more casual players who just buy the game on consoles to just play the story and maybe play a little of the other things for a bit.

To the PSN question, it's pretty irrelevant.
It is popular in regions where PC is strong(Europe/South Korea)

Like all fighting games, Tekken is popular in the US.
But if you're asking, the difference between it and other big titles in the sphere like Street Fighter 6 etc...
Tekken is unusually more popular than most other fighters in Europe and is and EXTREME outlier when it comes to South Korea. It is the most popular fighting game and has been for decades in the country.
It is also has pitiful Japanese numbers, the popularity of Tekken has been tanking domestically ever since the PS2 entries.

There's this website that breakdown Steam's titles review by language and here's the Top 10 for Tekken 8.

61.31% English
14.60% Korean
5.13% Russian
3.11% Spanish - Spain
2.61% French
2.47% German
2.29% Portuguese - Brazil
2.05% Simplified Chinese
1.24% Italian
1.05% Polish

For folks who don't use this website, the English portion is quite standard.
Korean being at nearly 15% for any game is extreme outlier territory.
For big releases anything from 2-5% is the usual for Korea.
Russian is a bit higher than usual.

Another thing that's standing out to me is that China has no love for Tekken, Simplified Chinese being down at #8.
That's reallly low numbers for Steam.

To give you a comparison with another fighter on Steam.
Here's the Top 10 for Street Fighter 6:

50.91% English
22.27% Simplified Chinese
5.67% Portuguese - Brazil
4.33% Japanese
3.43% Traditional Chinese
3.29% Spanish - Spain
2.61% French
2.49% Korean
1.11% German
0.94% Spanish - Latin America

As we can see, Chinese is behaving like usual(15-25% is very standard on Steam).
Japan is also really liking the game(the usual for Japan is 1-2%)

This confuses me
I was under the impression that PC wasn't a good place for fighting games, because at least with regards to tournament play, its easier to ensure everyone has an equal playing field when all of the consoles are the same at a tournament, rather than a wide range of PC setups. Or is it just that most people aren't interested in tournament play?

It's just an age old narrative like MIT required to install windows, or hours downloading drivers. The dimwits at netherrealm studios should get on with the program for example.

Fighting games are niche so they all need cross play. Don't tell me arcana heart 3 thrives on consoles.

EVO uses PS5s since Sony owns it now, smaller independent/local tournaments usually use PCs or Xbox Series S. If 2 people are playing on the same machine, it doesn't really matter what they're playing on, it'll be equal footing regardless.

Doubt it.

From sales data Tekken 8 when reached the 2 million milestone has around 70% of the sales from consoles.

Now people will say PC is more popular? Seems weird.

Plus trackers (that heavy over estimate PC sales) have the game at:

  • ~531.3 k by PlayTracker
  • ~685.8 k by Gamalytic
  • ~957.1 k by VG Insights
Which the worst scenario for consoles still is over 1 million.

yeah this isn't reliable info, the only official data we got regarding platforms is the closed beta network test. And PS5 had the most.

But I still wouldn't doubt this to be true, fighting games do best on PS at first, but have longer legs on PC. And despite buying EVO, Sony is actively alienating the FGC
