PlayStation Portal Sales Will be Tracked as a Console

It's been revealed that Sony has requested that the PlayStation Portal sales will be tracked as a console rather than an accessory.

It might seem a bit strange considering the PlayStation Portal is almost certainly a PlayStation 5 accessory, but according to Mat Piscatella in a now-deleted tweet, Circana will be tracking its sales as a console.

According to Piscatella, the request was made by Sony themselves and although the tweet is now deleted, a Resetera user managed to snag a screenshot.

It’s currently unclear if the now-deleted tweet is due to misinformation, or if Piscatella wasn’t allowed to reveal the information.

Officially, the $199.99 handheld by PlayStation is described as, ” the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal.”

Earlier today, it was revealed that the PlayStation Portal sold 5700 units in Spain, 3700 more than the Xbox Series X|S.

Definitely don't agree with it being tracked as a console as it is just a peripheral/add on. You need a PS5 to play it.

EDIT: Judge on reset bans people who post anything relating to that, including claiming Sony chose to track it separately.

Yeah, it's a bit strange. It's no different from a controller, in that it requires a console to be used.

Why do you think they did that? expecting it to do well, so they can brag about that metric?

I hvnt seen psvr2 sales in awhile. They don't track tht as console sales do they?

Big mistake if Sony themselves requested it. Sales won't be significant enough consistently. And it's an Accessory unless they don't want to overshadow their Edge sales during NPD?. Still weird though.

Someone on the other thread was saying the chip is good enough to play stuff locally and cloud streaming from PS+ (not remote play) so I'm guessing Sony have a keikaku for the device or they know it will get cracked full of 3rd-party emulators

Weird, it's clearly an accessory but I can see it selling well over the coming months, and Sony definitely has bigger plans for it.

I can see an OLED model coming in a couple of years too.

I saw that before.
Sony is marketing it as a hardware and not accessory.

For me it doesn't make any difference but for Xbots it hurts a lot because the numbers will be compared with Series.

Imagine a device that doesn't play games by itself selling more than "eat monster on breakfast" Series.
