External development? đź‘€
Normally means outsourcing.

You know, these many studios who work in the AAA games without being the lead studio and aren't credited in the trailers or game intros. And in many cases, not even properly credited in the game credits.

PlayStation is investing more money in single player games than ever before in its history. They’ve double the size of SIE and bought in studios and talent specifically to work in gaas and multiplayer. U guy’s really need to stop with the ps is only focused on gaas and is become Xbox nonsense because it isn’t supported by the facts. If u guys want 200mil lion+ single player games u really ought to be hoping gaas games succeed because if they don’t the money pool to pay for single player games is only going to get small. Your negative attitudes are counter productive and shortsighted.

Another live service “expert” 🤦‍♂️ just what PlayStation needs…
He never worked in any GaaS specific area and this is not a GaaS related position.

During 10 years he was first animator, later animation lead and later animation director at Volition (Saints Row series). Later senior animator and creative director at Boss Key (CliffyB's studio). And after that first lead art producer, then director of production and finally head of art & external development at Fortnite.

PlayStation has been calling "external development" as where one studio is involved in the creative process, while another external studio (working on the first studio's IP) pulling the legwork.

For example, Guerrilla now has an external development team that works with other studios working on Horizon games, e.g., FireSprite working on COTM, NcSoft working on the Horizon MMO, etc.

There is a possibility that other studios will be hired to make more games on Bungie IPs, with Bungie providing creative and narrative support.

I forgot to mention that SIE/PS Studios also has a team with multiple offices, XDev (short for External Development), who handles both the SIE 2nd party publishing (meaning games not developed by a Sony owned studio but published by Sony) and also the outsourcing needed for 1st and 2nd party games (meaning, for when these teams need external extra help to develop a portion of the game, let's say some art or animation).

So yes, could be either them outsourcing a part of the game -as done in most AAA games- or could also be that Bungie would publish games not developed by them. As could be a mobile version of their games.
