  • 📈 Sony saw a 2,350% rise in PSVR 2 sales yesterday, based on our data
  • 💰 The PSVR 2 price went from a steep $550 to $350 ($200 off)
  • 🤷‍♂️ After 24 hours, PSVR 2 has completely sold out at Amazon
  • 📆 It originally launched Feb 2, 2023. Sample data is from January 1 to now
  • 🥽 Many PS5 gamers found it too expensive before and had few VR games
  • 🔜 Aug 7: Sony plans to open up PSVR 2 to PC games with an adapter

The Shortcut reports a source showed it retailer data revealing a 2350% increase in PSVR 2 headset sales on the first day of the sale compared to the day before, and that this represented more units in one day than had been previously sold all year so far.

It seems that price is ultimately the deciding factor. It could be partly due to the recently announced Steam VR compatibility, but considering that the PSVR 1 market was bigger than the Steam VR market, I would bet that the price just wasn't right.

It's unbelievable that after all these years in the market, and considering that price was a key factor in the success of the PSX and the initial failure of the PS3, Sony still hasn't learned the lesson.

Hopefully this will make PS heads turn. PS5 price drop to $399 and blow the competition into smithereens for once and for all.

Good to hear. People want the device but the price point was the obvious hurdle for so many.

I hope Sony lowers the price permanently, and this was not to clear inventory forever.

This just shows how extremely stupid and shortsighted Jim Ryan was. They should've sold the headset at a loss at launch, since they'd make the money back from 3rd party sales on PSN...

Now that the headset supports PC, they choose to eat a loss? When they're not gonna be making a single dime from Steam VR sales? 🤦‍♂️ Pure stupidity. All this did was help grow PCVR and handed Valve even more market share of VR.

needs to be $399 max, Sony needs to learn to NEVER release an accessory costing more than the hardware itself

yep I bought the PSVR2 right when it came out but I understood why people didn't wanna pay $600 for a headset, Jim Ryan really wanted to nickel and dime everyone as much as he could. And now they're literally subsidizing PCVR gamers and growing the PCVR market. Valve just grew their share of the VR market substantially and didn't have to do anything, they're gonna be getting 30% of all vr games sold on Steam now while Sony makes nothing. Sony really doesn't think more than 1 step ahead anymore.

Imagine that. Should have happened much earlier. But that's not the issue. The thing needed more 1st party support.

Here's hoping we get more 1st party support with this or even more 3rd party.

Honestly, for people curious about VR and own both a gaming PC and a PS5, for $350 this is kind of a no-brainer.

Though unless Sony starts putting some of their 1st party weight behind the heaadset, this success is going to be very short lived.

Also, they should perhaps think of an update that uses pancake lenses instead of fresnel, but I feel like this might be nitpicking.

Nope, save yourself disappointment and don't expect any 1st party support. We'll be lucky to get 1 or 2 more games from 1st party for the rest of the gen.

or even more 3rd party.
There's already plenty of 3rd party exclusive, the best version of multiplats and a bunch of exclusives not on Quest/Steam. 3rd party is gonna carry it like PSVR1 and that's fine.

We barely have any 1st party PS5 exclusives....there's no point adding VR to the workload, especially with how niche it is.

PC doesnt need Sony games for VR to survive... Only the PS5.

They're not looking for long term success, just trying to dump unsold inventory.
