Not happening, due to recent big inflation rise, fuel cost rise, component costs rise etc. to put a normal PS5+dualsense edge bundle in the stores should cost like that or more.

They'd lose too much money selling that at $700-800.

Well, to do Remote Play you shouldn't need internet connection. Only to be in the same LAN as the PS5.
dualsense edge doesn't cost them that much to make, BoM and manufacturing cost is probably like $10 more than the regular dualsense which they include with the base ps5. Inflation cost isn't that much given that they're going to get a good deal on the APUs from AMD. ps5 apu probably costs like $50, a PS5 pro APU would cost like $150.

I still don't get the need for disc drive attachment?

If you want a disc drive on your digital PS5, buy a cheaper OG disc PS5, until they run out of stock.

If you bought a digital PS5 and now want disk access, well, I've heard the disc drive (DD) won't work on an OG digital PS5.... Wtf? So it's not an up-sell mechanic for OG digital buyers, it's a weird also-run sku/setup.

I don't think the scenario depth is that plausible - those that really wanted a disc PS5 for their old PS4 discs/cheap 2nd hand market, or movie discs, that settled for a digital console during the pandemic scarcity?

I could see the idea of a "backwards compatibility" disc drive working. Instead of mini consoles and game collections wrapped up in emulation layer on PS+, could just throw a PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 - logo'd mini fleet of slim disc drive attachments to enable people to use the games sat on bookshelf without plugging in at least 2-3 consoles. But I'd expect the digital backend cleanup, to go along with the physical product release.

While a Pro model might make sense considering we may be looking at an 8-year generation thanks to the chip shortage absolutely fucking up the first year, I don't see the purpose of it if it can't hit 4K/60 with RT enabled. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart already accomplishes 1440p/60 with RT on, so that extra push is absolutely within the realm of possibility.

If it were up to me, I would want the PS5 Pro to hit the following targets:
  • 4K/60 + RT
  • 1440p/90 + RT (with VRR)
  • 4K/90, no RT (with VRR)
  • 1440p/120, no RT
If games can hit those, and the console is at $600 or less, it'll be a hell of a deal. It'll be even better if Sony pushes publishers to put support for the upcoming FSR 3.0 in more games.

As for the Q Lite, I don't care about it at all. If Sony makes a handheld, I'm not interested in anything but a Vita 2 (without proprietary memory cards this time).
It is not realistic. You taking extreme case to make yourself unreasonable expectations.
Take basic 3rd party and what they do. Simple 4k60fps would be great but even that won't be the case with most developers.

The PS5 Pro would put the Xbox at such a bad position since they already have two consoles out. Would they actually show up with a third one and split their sales/production/logistics even further? How would they even go about making games for the Series S and for something that is twice more powerful than a Series X?

For Sony it's just so simple, a better performing PS5 for a premium price, there are actually no specific goals they need to reach beyond that as long as it's good for it's price. Now we have so many games with dynamic resolution and unlocked frame rate so things would be a lot more smoother this time compared to the PS4 Pro.

Personally I think Sony should drastically increase the CPU clock, double the CUs and improve the memory configuration to match that. The Series X already has 52 CUs in a 7nm process so 72 CUs in 5nm/4nm does not seem unreasonable. The market is likely ready for a $599 premium console if it comes to that, they could also double the storage to add value to it.

Maybe they heard that Xbox and Nintendo were working on upgraded consoles qnd didn't want to be the only ones without one? That's the only thing that makes sense imo as there aren't enough current gen games taking advantage of the hardware to justify a pro console.

I hope it does get canceled. Half step consoles are so dumb. I felt that way about PS4 pro even though marketing was an easy sell with 4K tv’s.

What are they going to do now? Here is your new 4K high framerate console that’s better than your current 4K high framerate console?

The adoption rate will be even less than PS4 pro.

That has nothing to do with, by that logic they shouldn't even have released the PS5 then.

A PS5 Pro will only render games at a better frame rate or at higher resolution it's not going to do anything other than that.

Anyone bothered by it can simply not buy it. There will be more than 75m PS5s sold if the PS5 Pro releases in the second half of 2024, the PS5 will still get all the focus from devs.

We already have 45+ Teraflops GPUs from AMD on the market since last year why can't the PS5 receive an upgrade before the PS6 in 2028/2029? If you can't spare $300 for the upgrade than keep playing on the regular PS5.

I'd buy the PS5 pro. I've been trying to convince the Mrs to buy a PS5 for my home office, so a Pro will give me the perfect cover to ship the living room console upstairs.

Bring it.

You seem to be misunderstanding what I'm saying. My point is that there are so many crossgen games still coming out and so few next-gen only games out that a pro-console's power would be wasted on what amounts to slightly shinier PS4 games. They don't need to waste all of these resources on extra hardware that serves no purpose. I also never suggested that a PS5 Pro would have games made exclusively for it.

Waste to who? They will make money out of PS5 Pro and at most it will require patches like the PS4 Pro did (that Sony didn't even bother with for many games).

PS5 is the baseline, the PS5 Pro is a premium option to those that want to pay extra to get something even better. I really don't understand how anyone would be upset over it. The PS4 Pro never got in the way of games performing well on the base PS4.

Waste to Sony, money that could be spent better elsewhere. We seem to disagree, but I don't think Sony should be wasting all of this time and money on spinoff consoles/potential handhelds that won't sell well. Just focus on supporting the regular PS5 before moving to anything else.

basically, why make a Pro when the normal PS5 hasn't been maxed out yet?

I'm hoping we can get some Apple inspired designs for hardware... especially the PS5 Pro.

This is too small but the general philosophy behind it could be applied.
