Rumor: Sony leadership feels that Bungie is a failed investment (take with 🧂🧂)

Popular YouTuber Aztecross received a rather concerning email (starts at 4:35 in the video above) that highlighted internal leadership stuggles between Bungie and Sony from an inside source:

I'm writing this on a throwaway. Please use this info to corroborate other sources you may have.
Internal perspective at Sony is very negative towards Bungie right now. It is seen as a failed investment and strategies being discusses[sic] revolve around more of recouping losses. One internal leader from US is fighting to take over to right the ship, while many others across the Pacific want a much harsher method. The former US leader holds a lot of respect from overseas leadership, so it is likely (s)he will get their way. That person's perspective is that there are a many 'gluttonous' executives at Bungie who are not doing their jobs and are hindering the organization. It is believed that the workers are skilled, but the leadership is unable to perform their duties.
Bungie is in a hard spot, because pre-order numbers are lower than anticipated. I apologize, I do not have details on actual numbers. Sony believes that the finances will not allow Bungie to avoid a takeover even with another round of layoffs, as that would cannibalize development and future revenue.
Overall, Sony has been very upset at Bungie leadership. They have not been able to successfully advise Sony teams, and while Lightfall hit internal revenue targets, every target since has been missed at an escalating decline. Bungie leadership regularly reschedule meetings with Sony leadership, know that the next timeslot can be months away.
I hope this sheds light for ongoings from Sony's side. It is believed that the takeover would allow Sony to turn Destiny into a more profitable game. This sounds bad, but it is being treated as 'lightning in a bottle'. Sony leadership wants to nurture the game, and understand that more aggressive monetization would not be healthy. There would be a monetization model switch, though, as it is believed the current model is too confusing. The main difference between the US leader vs Japan leaders getting their way matters more for Bungie's in-development titles. If Japan leadership gets their way, teams for future titles will be gutted and reformed

Question, why all of this coming up after Great Playstation news?

like, we started with Takeshi, now, this..
Idk might be coincidental, might be purposeful, might be the flow of news. I mean good and bad news continuously flows daily through outlets.

Nothing will change until they actually launch final shape, which includes a service model change to Destiny altogether. Until then you will see the same discussion since the initial projections miss.

Player engagement has started to reverse its decline in these last few weeks, which is encouraging 3 months before an expansion, and one which was delayed not just 7 months, but years. Lightfall and this passed year are filler aside from QoL updates mostly; which is obvious considering the last expansion’s opening and final cutscenes are just the opening cutscene to Final Shape.

We have leaks. April 9th is the major showcase. Destiny turns episodic for 6 episodes and the next saga drops in 2026 while leaving behind last gen hardware. Marathon is meant to make up for 2025 revenues now.

Maybe they shouldn't have gone all in on this GaaS crap. Who knew that wouldn't be a good thing. You know, besides almost everyone.

Good news is, Sony realizes this is a management issue and consiser actual devs to be good. Fire the executive bloat.

One conerning thing. "They have not been able to successfully advise Sony teams." So we lost Factions over Bungie's incompetence. Good job.

Sony needs to be cutthroat

Sony spend 4 billion on Bungie & allow them to remain multiplat just for Bungie to implode on itself & make Sony look like they wasted 4 billions dollar on 1 mid studio. Sony needs to fully take over Bungie & make future live service games exclusive to PS, PC & Mobile. If Bungie not gonna bring in $ what’s even the point of having them multiplat at the very least the can gain consumers from Xbox & Nintendo who like Bungie games & make them buy a PS console for Destiny, Marathon & future Bungie games. If I was the PS ceo I would cancel Xbox version of Marathon & Destiny 3/Destiny reboot & ensure those games are straight fire w a massive ad campaign & promoting both franchise to have HBO MAX & Netflix tv shows alongside.

Also they should’ve bought Square Enix for 5 billion instead to bolster PS ability to compete w Nintendo in Japan atleast increasing PS competitiveness. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest (ofc you would need to acquire the DQ ip) & Neir exclusive to PS all 3 franchise born or heavily associated w PS legacy would be massive. Not to mention the other smaller titles like LiveALive, Octopath, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Star Ocean etc. Gaining ip that can help expand to Asia markets & ip that can be translated to mobile games (I’m surprised Square Enix has created a gatcha console/mobile game like genshin impact w the same art style for the Final Fantasy & Dragon Quest ip those seems like no brainer ideas)

Reset shut this down for whatever reason. Regurgitated info sure but nothing would have changed in these last few months either.

  • Original source is likely from Sony, not Bungie
  • Aztecross is seemingly the only one who would be able to confirm the validity of this email at this moment
  • The outcome for this leadership struggle will decide the fate of Marathon and other future projects.
  • Sony wants to go all-in on Destiny 2. Seems that Sony leadership cares much more for the game than Bungie leadership does.

Disagree that bungie doesn’t care lol. There are indicators they’re actually doubling down on it.

Their service model needs the change that’s coming. It sorta needs to come out of service as it is now tbh. In addition to having all previous content revamped and bundled instead all a la carte where simply pre ordering final shape in some form should catch you up on all content.

There should also be no ps plus paywalls etc… a player will download the f2p version and have no content or multiplayer…. Like how does that work in their favor?

You also have Blackburn being replaced a director after 3-4 years. The executive blame for lightfall is off base. Blackburn owns that.

There’s a byf video detailing how this entire year has been filler narratively if interested. As an entire expansion and year of content was added to lead into and prepare for this final expansion.

As a fan… unfortunately this is the cycle. Historically at this point is where bungie actually knocks shit out of the park. Dunno if they can pull that kind of stuff off forever but that’s the trend they need to break.
