Sea of Stars is VERY Overrated (IMHO)

I know reviewers love indies and so do many others but this game is mid.

the graphics and art style are great but beyond that it’s completely mediocre. Never seen such bad writing in a game.

i can’t help but compare it to chained echoes. That games writing was actually good, but the translation made a lot of the dialogue weird. I have no idea what grade school was allowed to do the sea of stars script

Nobody really seems to mention the story. I think the artstyle is the coolest aspect of it. Seems like another overrated indie game though.
I agree that it's vastly overrated. It's a nice little game, but 7/10 is a ceiling for it.

Not mad at this take. The art style does seem to be a form of autopilot to critical acclaim.

Played about an hour just got out of the tutorial school area before jumping to BG3

Seemed solid but I wasn't hooked yet

How far have you played?

About an hour and a half before i just gave up, while the art style is good it isn't enough to carry the whole game.

The story feels like a saturday morning cartoon, reviewers kept comparing this to Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG.

It's not even in the same ballpark.

I'm quite a bit further than that and it's starting to pick up a little. The beginning of the game is pretty slow indeed. But the two other games you mentioned don't really have Shakespearean writing in their first 2 hours either?

It is a JRPG. Somewhat naive and childish writings is their appeal

True, when I think of the biggest names in jRPG... Dragon Quest will never win an award for writing, it's extremely childish lol
But to be fair it is probably the most influential games series out there.

It's word buildings probably influence the Japanese games and shitty novels wrote by garbage writers which would ended up bring converted to shitty animations and comic books.

The whold "Maou", guilds, quests bullshit comes from that series.

I would say it is the Star Wars of Japan.

Star Wars as a whole has really good writing especially in the unofficial novels (and the comics) though. The problem with jRPG writing is mostly how formulaic it is. I wonder if that's because the jp market doesn't tolerate innovative stories in jrpg, or if the company culture only tries to do the things that were successful in the past.

Teenagers and nostolgia.

It is a bit hard to explain but, well, you knows what it is...

These Western "jrpgs" never click with me. It may very well be that cultural differences mean their imitation of the original always come off as inferior.

Or Megami Tensei.

There maybe one or two outliers

I'd add Shining Force 3 to that list, though it's more a strategy RPG.

It used to. Modern Star Wars has terrible writing. The latest Disney+ show is just another example of it IMO, even if it's better than some of the past ones. That isn't saying very much, though.

Chrono Trigger is just a very well paced game, the story really gets going early on which hooked me.

I haven't really played enough of Super Mario RPG to comment on it.

Sea of Stars just hasn't really hooked me

Fair enough, I'm 2-3 hours past the demo and the game finally starts to pick up a little and I just got some new abilities/a new party member. I'm gonna reserve judgment bc the game is technically quite good, the pixel art is great, gameplay is solid, but I could definitely see someone saying it's a 6 or 7 due to the slow first few hours. Could be that way throughout, I'll report back this weekend

I just played for about an hour or two. After the slug boss and now I'm in the mountain trail.

I'm not head over heels but it's fine. I'll keep playing 🙂
