Sony boss admits forcing PC gamers into PlayStation accounts can "invite pushback," but insists they have to keep games safe

I'm not super impassioned by this subject; however, I do think it's worth mentioning this is at least an uncommon experience for PC gamers.

I have 700+ games on Steam and a handful require secondary launchers or sign ons.

Requiring secondary sign-on for Steam purchases is an exception, not the norm.

Sony also had not been requiring this feature for most of their single player games, as none of the ones I've purchased till now required this.
I've been trying to explain this for months they just say we're cherry picking

okay what is the importance of lots of people having PSN accounts
I mean I have a PSN account but why is this a focus like what does it gain
they want to track how many people play both on PS and PC. How many people created the account for PC and then bought PS5. And more importantly how many people jumped from PS to PC.

They can track if doing PC releases is damaging their PS brand.

Not emotional responses like we see on this board, but data based metrics.

They can also see how many people are double dipping on games to better determine if they should provide dual entitlements for their own storefront or not.

If a lot of people are double dipping, you don't want to do that, but if barely anyone is? Why not? It's evidence you're not leaving money on the table.

Funny enough in the same question he was asked about political correctness in Concord and what lessons would be taken from that and Totoki dodged the question lol. Tbf there's not a lot you can say to that

You guys clamored for japanese leadership taking back more control of PS, well here it is… this dude is a moron and will bring down playstation along with hermen hulst.

But i do hope this backfires on them, then maybe they will kill pc support alltogether (probably not).

A lot of PC gamers are entitled whiners with a massive ego. It's really not worth riling them up for MAUs.
More than the whiny PC gamers, it's the low number of their SP games sales which are not worth it. But I guess any small increment is better than nothing.

People complain, but they're still buying Sony games on Steam.

I think Sony's bigger problem is not addressing easily addressable elements. Like getting PSN up and working in certain regions. At the end of the day the cost must not be worth it to them, but I do think it would be pro-consumer and blunt a pretty silly talking point.

It's disappointing that Sony's response to pushback on this feature resulted in entire countries being unable to legally play these games on PC.

I wonder if that really the point because 200-300k more MAUs won’t show as grow to investors.
It also doesn't make a ton of sense, were that to be true, since nearly all their PC ports are single player narrative adventures. You get a bit of MAU activity from somebody until they beat the game, then presumably no more unless they replay it.

I think the goal is not to increase MAU… that won’t happen.

It is more about creating ecosystem.
Make people use PSN accounts with its features and start to like to have the account.

For example having trophies in a single place.

Unified friends list would be pretty great for multiplayer titles. Imagine logging into your PS5 and being able to see a friend playing Helldivers 2 on PC without even needing to boot the game up.

I think they'll bring the mandatory PSN account back for HD2 once they figure out what to do with the players who bought the game in unsupported countries.
