Sony president: PSN has 118M MAUs, half are on PS4. What does Sony need to do to bring them over to PS5?

a price cut + exclusive games can bring part of the crowd to the ps5

it will be more accessible and maybe there are a lot of people who are like me, who wait until the console finally have a specific big title that you like to justify the buy. For me it was FF16, maybe some people like other games and since sony is radio silence for years there is no need to buy a ps5 without your favorite IP on it

Ps4 players are either those who want a price cut or those who already get their gaas fix on ps4.

Well PS4 was already $299 so nobody cared about PS3 😂

The e video game market adoption probably follow a price point…

1) Early adopters and enthusiasts pays full price.
2) Masses buys at mid price.
3) And finally everybody else buys at low price.

PS4 transited from 1 to 3 is a well normal way… having price cuts or cheap new models each 2 years.

PS5 is having a hard time to move from 1 to 2.

What makes PS5 be still close to PS4 sales even with discrepancy in price points is that PS5 sales potential is bigger than PS4 so you have more people that pays the early adopters and enthusiastic prices.

Where PS5 is running behind PS4 is in Europe where PS5 is the most expensive relative to PS4.

So many of these people just play CoD or Fifa/EA FC. Even Gran Turismo 7 which was a big seller in Europe was still on PS4.

Many of these games don't support Crossplay across generations, but they still let people play with their friends who might still be on the same generation.

As soon as publishers drop PS4 as a platform, a lot of people are going to buy PS5, but naturally it will continue to happen as people realize they can't play with their friends because they've moved on.

It's why all these people making up narratives about the PS5 running behind PS4 because of PC are so laughably wrong. These people will come. When GTA6 releases and when EA FC and CoD no longer come out on PS4.

The more popular Helldivers 2 gets the more people will look to buy a PS5 as well. It's not a traditional system seller, but it might keep PS5 afloat during these slower summer months because it isn't playable on PS4, though ironically, I bet Sony wishes it was.

Basically the top 20+ most played games on PS5 are also available on PS4. So people keep playing them on PS4 because the game they like to play continue there. In the past people got rid of a game on a week or two for most cases. Nowadays the most popular games are GaaS, and with GaaS they play a game for months or years.

That means the PS4 and PS5 generation will last longer because players are happy with these games at least as long as they continue getting support and they don't get a next gen only sequel.

The publishers have to release more top performings like Helldivers 2 that are PS5 only to make people want to make the jump. Over time will happen with GTA6, Rainbow Six sequel, FIFA/CoD, Bungie's next game Marathon (or Destiny 3), etc.

These were the most played games on PSN (not only PS5) in the last 30 days according to PS-Timetracker:

As you can also see there, most of the top 20 or so played games on PS are GaaS titles. A player playing these games means they aren't playing another game at the same time. So basically this, plus the fact that most of these games are also the top grossing ones, make big publishers like Sony or Microsoft want to have their top performing GaaS titles.

Great breakdown. Thanks.
It's also worth mentioning that according to Sony said in past years there isn't only a record amount of people still active in PS4 at this point of its generation: they also having record engagement for the PS4 at this point, mostly thanks to GaaS/F2P.

So they are making money with PS4 too even if PS4 hardware sales are super low right now.

It's a similar problem that Nintendo has when it releasing new systems.

If someone already has Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, how interested are they in getting Mario Kart 9 plus a new system. Is it worth 460 dollars to upgrade from Mario Kart 8 to 9?

That's a tall order.

Similarly, people don't feel the need to jump from CoD on PS4 to PS5 since it's the same game in large part, but this audience is more willing than Nintendo's to get the next game if it isn't available on the current system, they'll buy the new system.

Epic has already cut off support for some older phones.

The Switch will fallout probably within a year or 2 of the switch 2 releasing. And the PS4 and Xbox One won't be far behind.

Once the supply chain issues resolved, they probably should have picked up PS4 production again, but they probably felt like it was too late.

I wonder if they could have sold the PS4 for profit or breakeven for 200 dollars and maybe the PS4 Pro for 250-300 and if they realized engagement would stay this strong if they would have rethought that.

But what I tell these PC Doomsayers is that the evidence of people still actively playing on their PS4 suggests that they haven't moved to PC. 118 MAUs is evidence that Sony can still sell more than 118 million units in this generation (those MAU numbers are still rising, as more people are buying PS5 that never owned PS4s). They can probably get that number towards 150 with a Playstation handheld and a PS6.
