Sony should consider an entry-level PS5

just buy a ps4 if you cant afford a ps5,

also btw PS5 prices used and refurbed are pretty low. 280-370 is the price range for used Playstation 5s these days

Don't worry, they'll have an entry level portable for PlayStation 6. So while it has nothing to do with PlayStation 5, it will happen in a few more years.

Yes, create one more target spec on the same generation. Devs absolutely love that, especially if it means they need to retroactively compile a new binary after lowering rendering resolution for a weaker machine (and praying it'll "just work", because it probably won't).

Exactly.

Thats it and if they want something less powerful, there is still PS4 Pro...

Going between both is kinda redundant imo.

Actually the PS4 is the entry product😅 Sony should continue to make smaller and cheaper PS4 models. There are still more 3rd world markets where the PS4 sales hasn’t saturated. This isn’t something new. Sony used this tactic back in the 2000s as the cheaper/smaller PS one model launched after the PS2, and it worked out well.

The only thing holding the Series S back is the memory.

Resolution is controlled by the power of the GPU.

The Series S has the same CPU as the Series X, but it is also underclocked.

PSSR moving forward would allow for a weaker device to be sold cheaper, which would get PS5s into people's hands who want a PS5 for games like CoD and Fortnite but don't want to pay 400+ for it.

Combined with a smaller nm chip, it could result in considerable cost savings for Sony which they could pass onto consumers.

While I'm not calling you out, I did call out that many would not actually read what I wrote and would insist that the Series S faults lie where they aren't.
I get that but I think it's not so simple in practice.

The meme at the start of this gen was that the series potato was a 1080p machine next the it's bigger cousin who did 4k.

In reality, not only is the resolution lower with series potato games, but a bunch of other graphical features.

If Sony offered a console with same CPU, same memory, same SSD, same audio tech, AI chip for PSSR, etc. BUT only had a weaker GPU, it is still possible that developers would need to adjust other graphical settings, which proves to be extra work.

I'm also not sure how much less expensive they could make it, considering it would use many same components as the regular PS5.

Their best bet would still be to lean into cloud gaming for the ultra casual crowd.

If Sony wanted a cheaper entry for the PS5 just cut the storage from 500gb to 150gb & get rid of the controller & sell it for $300. Players can use a PS4 controller or get one used, from a friend or a la carte

That's only if the GPU is sufficiently weak and it's relatively easily to calculate needs and leave a buffer.

My point is that there are 4+ years left in this generation (people will continue to buy PS5s beyond the release of the PS6) and a cheaper model brings more people in.

Everyone is so panicked by the Series S that they don't stop to look at the fact that it was actually a good idea, just poorly executed.

People also have a fundamental misunderstanding of "something holding something back" as if the same developers aren't developing games with minimum requirements on PC far below this.

Even if they couldn't descale from a hardware level, they could simply say this works for select titles.
