Starfield 2 will be “one hell of a game” claims designer as Bethesda learns from its mistakes

Bethesda Game Studios has released its first new IP in over 30 years with Starfield, a bold sci-fi RPG that has released to mixed appeal. In its debut release, Starfield hasn’t clicked with fans as much as worlds like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, but designer Bruce Nesmith believes the game is a strong foundation for a future sequel.

Nesmith explained the issues with creating new franchises for a studio like Bethesda. With the studio spending decades evolving their existing RPGs, Starfield was a new challenge that should result in “one hell of a game” in the future.

“When we built Skyrim, we had the tremendous advantage of Oblivion, which had the tremendous advantage of Morrowind. All that stuff was there for us,” Nesmith explained. “All we had to do was continue to improve and add new stuff in. We didn’t have to start from the ground up. If we’d had to start from the ground up, that would have been another two or three years of development time.

“I’m looking forward to Starfield 2. I think it’s going to be one hell of a game because it’s going to address a lot of the things people are saying, ‘We’re quite there. We’re missing a little bit.’ It will be able to take what’s in there right now and put in a lot of new stuff and fix a lot of those problems.”

While games like Fallout have decades of history to take from and a tonne of past mistakes to learn from, a universe like Starfield has to essentially start from scratch. Nesmith likens the experience to games like Mass Effect or Assassin’s Creed, franchises that has rough starts but resulted in amazing sequels.

“If you look at the first Dragon Age, the first Assassin’s Creed, the first game in a lot of IPs, they tend to show off flashes of brilliance amid a lot of other things that don’t quite catch everybody’s eye,” the Skyrim developer explained. “No, they’re not quite as hot and popular. It takes, sadly, sometimes a second or third to version of the game in order to really enrich everything.”

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed Bethesda game.

But I hear what they're saying. It's not a fantastic stance, since dozens of original IP come out each year with better critical reception, but if they want to take the position they'll be learning from their mistakes, that's fine with me.

I suppose we'll need to wait and see, if and when they're ready to show this hypothetical sequel.

Given how long their production times have been recently, I think no matter where they put resources, it'll be several years before we see a release.

While I do think many would like to see them get another entry into their established franchises out the door, I do see that they're trying to diversify their portfolio.

For me personally, Starfield is already one hell of a game. Starfield is my 9.5/10 and current game of the generation (and I only see Baldur's Gate 3 as being better but will never play it) as it has the best quests (main story, faction and side) since The Witcher 3 (which coincidentally was my PS4/XBO game of the generation), great ground/on foot as well as ship combat, skill trees that you actually need to put some effort into in order to upgrade them, excellent story and characters with choices and consequences, great persuasion system and love the lock-picking mini-game.

Including Shattered Space, I have played 500+ hours in Starfield. Best of all, I will be starting a new play-through next year using Creations which are fucking awesome. So many people wanted the Creation Engine gone after Fallout 4 and back then, I agreed after playing through The Witcher 3 twice but now, not so much if at all. While I would love for Bethesda Game Studios to create a brand new built from the ground Creation Engine for next generation, in no way, shape or form do I want them using any other game engine because it would completely restrict everything that you as the player and those who create can do in the game.

Absolutely love Starfield and can't wait for their next expansion in a year from now. As for Starfield 2, first things first, The Elder Scrolls VI and the Fallout 5 baby!!! Let's go!!! 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

Are you sure MS will greenlight Starfield 2? I wouldn't bet on it. At least, not putting the resources they did put in the first one at all. They spent a lot of years with many thousands of people there and I'd say it sales weren't at that level.

I think that if Starfield 2 ever exists will be a much smaller and shorter game.

It isn't coming earlier than 2035 if ever, unless m$ would be stupid and decide to make it first, before Elders Scrolls and Fallout, but even m$ aren't that dumb, are they!?

Starfield severely underperformed compared to previous Bethesda tentpole releases. I still find it shocking tbh. It doesn’t have the same kind of post release cult fan following those games would either.

I kinda find it disappointing this is what the plan ended up being. Half-baked release with like two dlcs and recycle for a sequel. I dunno… I feel like the industry moved passed that model too.

Mass Effect trilogy still ends up being the more ambitious sci fi adventure and that was a long time ago.
