In the six months since it launched, Starfield, Bethesda's long-awaited space RPG, has seen its Steam player count drop by over 300,000

Starfield was supposed to be Bethesda’s next big thing, on a par with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. But it was released to a decidedly mixed reception and in the five months since it launched, it’s lost over 97% of its Steam player base.

The game’s reviews are currently sitting at mixed, which is a step up from the previous ‘mostly negative‘. And the Steam figures don’t account for those who are purchased it via the Xbox store or are playing it on Game Pass. But it’s still not a great look for Bethesda, particularly when you consider that these players paid for the game. YouTube Thumbnail

After peaking at 330,273 concurrent Steam players shortly after launch, Starfield is now down to just under 9,000 (via SteamDB). By contrast, over 25,000 Steam players are currently playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Player drop off is understandable for a single player game.

But… doesn’t look great next to Baldur’s Gate doing what it’s doing and with Cyberpunk still doin numbers.

It honestly sucks, if had just been a regular multiplataform game scores would be much lower and the outrage would be much bigger.

Flop of the generation.

It’s a flop, there’s no other way to look at it. Saved by Steam on launch hype alone, and then dropped like a stone. How they managed to fleece that extra dollar from the clowns who were convinced to pay for early access through GP is hilarious.

Yes the game is bad and didn’t deserve to make more money but imagine how much money MS left on the table by making it console exclusive, and being on GP?

Didn't they claim this had 12 million players at one point?

Yeah Spencer did back in December oh how the mighty have fallen.

To be honest they're better off not porting this to Ps5 unless they do a complete overhaul and fix all their bugs in it. With double the Playstation console owners over the Xbox ones you can bet the review scores will be definitely lower then the other reviews. P.S not because of the my console is better then yours mindset either.

You can do this with any single player game on steam. God of war lost 93% after 6 months. RE4 lost 98%. Baldur's gate 3 lost 80%.

You ignored the obvious screenshot where more people are playing Skyrim on steam when compared with the supposed Game of the Generation, Game of the Century, biggest game of all time, Starfield.

I wasn't focused on how it compares to skyrim, but on the metric of player % drop for single player games. Its dumb. skyrim has higher numbers because its an overall better rated game with extensive mod support and is a popular ip.

Almost all SP games drop that much at this point in time.
The real issue with Starfield is the overall reception but the also fact the full modding suite is not out yet.

For comparison, google tells me this:

When did Skyrim modding tools come out?
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim launched on November 11, 2011, and the mod tools were shared with the community on February 7, 2012, alongside the High Resolution Texture Pack. It took a little longer for Fallout 4, which launched on November 10, 2015 and received its own modding tools in PC Open Beta on April 26, 2016.

Skyrim took 3 months and Fallout 4 took a little while longer at 5 1/2 months.

So Starfield is already behind Skyrim and its just about a few weeks of matching Fallout 4's Beta on PC for full tools and we don't have any release window or date beside a vague 2024.
