Subscription services are slowing, signs of potential subscription fatigue, and slow subscription adoption beyond the console owner base

Amazon Prime and PS+ poverty tier are the only subs I have and I don't really like either of them.

Cancelled all entertainment media streaming subs because shit is literally free these days, and I don't mean pirating. Music is freely available on Youtube, radios, and my iPod. There are many choices available online for free television and movies. If I had this much free shit on demand available as a kid I would have been blown away, who needs a propaganda season pass. Subscriptions are about keeping up with the Joneses, and I have no desire or need for that.

So when is Bloomberg Takahashi going to do his write-up on this developing reality and its implications for Game Pass?

Oh wait he won't because that's not a PlayStation service. Well maybe the hack will write something up about future PS+ subs and revenue declining to go along with his other hack write-ups when it comes to PlayStation.

A subscription was never gonna be the way to the mainstream, the talk of billions of gamers is absolute wishful nonsense. It was again Microsoft with the '3 billion gamers' crap talk.... they can't even get past 25 million and most of those are using some type of big discount or promotion.

And for the record, it wasn't gonna work for Sony if they tried it either.... they had a PSTV and it failed. Streaming will fail too, as it has every time before.

The way to expand the numbers of gamers is to sell more consoles. That is it.

PC is collapsing once again after the covid boom and as an architecture it is not ideal for gaming, so I encourage Sony and Nintendo to lean into their advantage as dedicated gaming machine makers.

Not toys.... dedicated gaming machines.

I have way to many video subscription but since I share them with my family I'm kinda locked in. If they start to crackdown on that I'll just drop every single one and start rotating.

PS+ extra is good enough to keep me paying for it but it's not very exciting, If things like online and cloud saving weren't behind a paywall I would probably not pay for it.

No chance I'll ever pay for Gamepass for more than one month and so far I never paid more than $1.

HBO Max is my favorite streaming service, their catalog is crazy good and I actually enjoy the way episodes are released weekly. Prime Video has the best value because it's just a bonus for free shipping. Disney kinda sucks unless you have kids, just not enough content on a regular basis. Netflix has too much garbage in it now even if you eventually get something good, just getting it for one of two months per year would be enough for me.

This is true to pretty much all services, since we have so much options only the highest quality stuff matters.

Out of all entertainment industries, games are the one that needs the most full paying subscriptions otherwise you will have to skimp on actual quality

Trying to get rid of netflix but my 2yo boy, or some leeching relative.. always re subs.
It's basically single click after you open the app on mobile, tablet and TV if you're signed in. 😅
Need to remember to force sign out everyone on my family account next time before ending the sub.

I will never understand how someone thought more subscriptions was a good idea...

It's basically a recurring fee / extra bill and takes the fun out of buying something because you're excited for it and really want it.

You pay more as an obligation and to guarentee ongoing entertainment. It really REALLY sucks.

Fatigue? They are making more money than they ever did before.

Sony's amount of subscribers is flat but their game subs revenue increased 13% yoy this FY, and made $3.4B.

And the game sales decreased a bit but game sales revenue (physical+digital+addons) increased a 10.5% yoy this FY.

They are only apparently peaking in the amount of GP and PS Plus subscribers, but I assume that as PS5 continues skyrocketing in sales they'll continue to slowly grow soon. But in the most importnat part, the money they make, keeps growing.

And soonish they should expand their cloud gaming to mobile and smart tvs, so they may get maybe a couple of million extra subs more there.

I wouldn't mind paying a subscription fee for access to tons ps1,2,3 and psp games. Like what Nintendo is doing but without drip feeding 3 games a month.

Plenty of Classic PlayStation games don't get enough love.

Part of it is that the new PlayStation Plus was just pitiful in its own right. $100 for the Classics Collection on Premium and it's still got a barebones selection a whole year later? And there's no cheaper substitute for PlayStation Now (which wasn't great either)? And you're removing the PlayStation Plus Collection on top of that? Dammit, Sony.

(I don't have PC GamePass and don't own an Xbox, so I'm not in a position to comment on that.)
