The studio confirmed it would shed staff via a statement posted to social media platform X, in which it blamed "significant challenges" facing the games industry to which it was not "immune".

A Bloomberg report states around 150 people were told their jobs were at risk this morning, with around 90 staff eventually expected to leave the business following a consultation period. Supermassive is believed to currently employ around 350 staff in total.

On the one hand, this shit happens. On the other hand, it kinda looks like Sony had something to do with poaching Supermassive talent into Ballistic Moon, to do the Until Dawn remake and anything that happens next.

Supermassive kind of screwed Sony over, so I think it's fair to say turn about it fair play.

Hopefully Ballistic can hire even more staff now whether they are impacted or not. Who would want to stay at this studio now?

Sony didn't poach them. They left Supermassive and founded Ballistic Moon.

You had to find a way to blame Sony right?

If anything this studios pretty much set itself for failure the moment they abandoned their partnership with PlayStation and bet on Xbox and PC sales.

Not related, Ballistic Moon isn't a studio owned by Sony, and existed since at least mid 2019. It's an independent studio created mostly by former Supermassive devs that later signed a deal with Sony to make the Until Dawn remake.

If Sony would have poached them, then it would have been to hire them for a Sony owned studio, which isn't the case. And the team was created at least 5 years ago so these people left even before. Supermassive had more than enough time to replace them.

The layoff should be more related to the recent Supermassive Games titles not performing as well as needed, combined with bad current management not capable of addressing their studio situation securing game projects and funding, or something like that.

Something had to be wrong at Supermassive if an important group of workers leave to create a new studio, and if Sony decides to don' ask Supermassive to make the remake but instead to ask for it to the guys who left.

Other than that, if someone poaches a few people, they can hire someone else talented and experienced enough to replace them. A studio doesn't fire 90-150 people because a few people left.

you got it twisted, friend. i'm the one who likes what Playstation is doing. I'm not the one saying every exec since Jack Tretton is trying to kill the brand.

Yeah just typical demand not being there for their games. They sold decently but not enough to keep up long term employment for all, very rare is a Rockstar situation.

Sony should hire at least 30 of these 90 to work at Ballistic Moon, and btw it's about time for Sony to purchase Ballistic Moon if they haven't already

The Quarry is really fucking good tho. I hope they don't split the baby in a direction that kills both sides.

you need update your knowledge about what - Poaching means. because clearly, you don't know.

Don't you think it's a little easier to leave your job to start a competitor company if you've already got a multi-million dollar contract with one of your employer's biggest clients?
