I'm asking for receipts. I saw that video and it looks good. But I need to see Ellie fight multiple enemies to see how well it flows.
You made it sound like you knew the answer 🤣.

Now, animations blending is kind of one of naughty dog's things... But maybe we will learn that actually they re pretty bad at what they're doing (one more time).
The Last Of Us Fight GIF by Naughty Dog

I admit that their horses animations were sub par compared to other animations in the game.

I love how this thread backfired.
It didn’t, I called this games animation and scripting out years ago. Called it out in the reveal, and was proven correct after the release.

Great stuff all things considered but like I said the reveal was bullshot level. Downgrades all over the place.

Keep lying to yourself if that helps you deal with it.

Keep lying to myself lmao? Take a look in the mirror, pal. The game was directly analyzed and what I said was factually correct basically from top to bottom.

General animations, contextual animations, physics, scripting, textures, specular effects, asset density, shadows and lighting all saw downgrades from the reveal to release.

LIKE I SAID it was still impressive, but it was scaled back. What is shown at reveal almost never lines up with a final product.

Ellie / Abby in TLOU 2 has amazing animations. I think that surpasses everything we've had to date.

Nathan Drake from Uncharted 4 also has almost flawless animations and how naturally the character moves.

Arthur Morgan from RDR 2 also had excellent animation, but the realistic nature of the game meant it wasn't as "free-flowing" as some other more arcadey games could be. But it's still in the top 5 for me.

Kratos in the entire God of War series was all about free-flowing animation. And although God of War (2018) added more "weight" to the character, I think it is still very free-flowing and above most stuff that's out there.

In my opinion:
  1. TLOU 2
  2. Uncharted 4
  3. God of War (2018)
  4. RDR 2
There is just no animation jank in these games.

Because it is, it's pretty obvious that all the animations of TLoU2 are on a league of their own.
A league of it's own. The video you showed me doesn't exhibit anything superior to SoM. When one evaluates this kind of question, you have to look at all aspects of movement. How is the parkour? Does it snap to a particular colored region when reacting to geometry? How is the walking running animation transition?

You trying to somehow disregard it just because they are a Sony studio is ridiculous.
I'm not trying to disregard it because it's Sony. I'm trying to disregard your biased opinion (which is 100% always tilted toward whatever Sony does). If you feel it has merit in this case, then show receipts.
Shadow of Mordor sucks by the way and shouldn't even exist, it disrespect everything that Tolkien created and is above anything else a complete abomination.
We aren't talking about one game vs. another game overall. It sucking to you isn't relevant to the discussion. We are talking about animation.

Wait, you didn't play it?
No, I don't own the game otherwise, I would have done my own analysis on it. Once it comes to PC, I'll give it a good evaluation.

Guys, a lot of these games use mocapped frames to show their animation. Listing multiple mocapped games without giving any justification as to why they are superior to other mocapped animations in games isn't participating in the discussion correctly. When I ask for receipts, some of you guys aren't giving any. You are just listing the games you think have cool animations and that's that.

I'm moving this thread into the tech section to emphasize that I want specifics and not opinions.

Ellie in TLOU2 is the most well animated character. Simultaneously having the biggest range of animations and the most well animated.

Once you play and realise there a ton of permutations to how she moves just dependant on how you start moving, the camera placement, the environment, body position, momentum and it's all motion matched so there are no weird cuts in the animation

General animation:

Combat is also on a different level. Not just the options in movement, but the minor tweaks that make each encounter feel unique based on how it animates relative to what the enemy is doing. And how well the movement and contact when fighting is sold

Combat:

The best thing about it is how it all works together, it makes everything feel truly seamless and like there is an appropriate response in the controls to any action I want to make.
Thanks for this! I'll check it out.

I would put Ghost of Tsushima above Shadow of Mordor anyday.
I owned GoT and no, it wasn't as flowing as SoM. I could still see discontinuity in GoT although I loved the samurai feel.

Are you even serious? How is it my fault that you chose to make a thread about ND's greates strength?

Turns out you didn't even play the game... you should trua those who played the game, it's on another level.

I'm OK with ND's animation being superior to all other animation systems but you HAVE to prove it! That's what I requested when I made the thread. Just saying that it is, bar none, isn't good enough. @Yobo gave a clear example with development videos. I gave him props for it.

If I had played every game that people list as competitive, I wouldn't have made the thread. I would have just made my own analysis thread that wouldn't require anyone else's input.

I don't need to prove anything, I just gave my opinion, you'll get to see it for yourself once you played.

TLoU Pt2 is so good in great part due to the ridiculous amount of effort put in those animations. It's hard for any studio to compete with that.

GoT is more realistic, animation quality is much higher too, just movement of the character has better flow than choppy walking in Shadow of Mordor, unsheething weapons in Shadow of Mordor looks extremely bad in comparison, GoTs transition between different animations flows better.

I usually don't comment on threads, but I have to comment on this one.

Assassin's Creed and Shadow of Mordor don't hold a candle to TLOU 2. I'm including all Assassin's Creed games.

And I don't know what the right answer is, but TLOU 2 is on a league of it's own compared to any of the Ass Creed games and SoM.

Pathetic that you still hang on to conspiracy theories when the game already released and you can see it for yourself, unbelievable...
Console war angle incoming:

Sony games: we argue about them not being the very best in all aspects.

Nintendo games: we argue about them being the most playable/fun on quirky hardware.

Xbox games: we argue that they may not be the worst after all, say least they have Gamepass and VRS 2!
