I’m not saying it’s a negative to me but it all depends on the profit margin they gain on a sale of the portal vs the Ps5 if it’s a negative to Sony.
I doubt they are making any loss on tht portal. Interesting to see how much it costs to develop this thing.

Yeah I know but in a long run, which one would they make more money with over time?

Portal and PlayStation plus subscription
Or
Ps5, game sells and PlayStation plus subscriptions?

They’d be more profitable if someone didn’t buy a PS5, but put that money into game purchases, all other variables kept constant.

Profit margins on hardware are razor-thin, software is all gravy by comparison.

Not to mention, streaming through Plus allows you to stream purchased games in your library, so they aren’t precluding software sales in that case.
I understand. I was just asking how would they implement it to avoid someone from just buying the portal and skip the PS5 system and eco system

I think for them thy don't see it that way. I think very few ppl will choose to buy a Portal over a PS5 especially given Portal drawbacks. They see this as a win either way and many ppl double dipping and a few just buying the portal due to financial limitations and never getting the PS5 anyway due to price point.

I don't see them in competition against eachother.

They’re in the ecosystem by buying the portal, since the portal is locked into the ecosystem to do anything but sit on a shelf.

Hey im all for it. I already have my portal preordered. I was just curious about how they plan on implementing it if they still want this to be a companion accessory no a replacement.

I look forward to testing mine out this week.

It’s like when the iPhone launched and a journalist asked Steve Jobs if he was worried that the iPhone would cannibalize sales from iPods.

He told the reporter “Something will eventually take sales away from the iPod, I just want it to be another Apple product that does it.”

As long as you’re bringing the customer into your domain, a sale is a sale.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Platform Experience Senior Vice President Hideaki Nishino:"When PS5 first launched, I envisioned it having a curve similar to PS4. However, as you know, due to the pandemic, logistics and procurement have been delayed, and demand has not been met in some cases.""We are now seeing the results of our efforts to improve internal systems, such as making it possible to purchase parts from multiple companies. We hope to gain momentum this holiday season and catch up with the number of PS4s (cumulative shipments from launch to the same period) towards the end of the fiscal year.""(Regarding PS5 shipments) Of course, there are some differences due to supply issues and other factors. However, demand for consoles (dedicated game machines) is overwhelmingly high during the holiday season. In the first place, we had planned to actively expand at this time, and our focus on this area has not changed.""After three years, it's also a time when you've become more proficient at using the software and the number of good software increases.""In other words, our prediction that this year's year-end sales season will be a key point in the transition from PS4 to PS5 has not changed from the beginning."

Portal peripheral device that allows you to play PS5 more deeply and for longer. However, Portal is different from what you would call a portable game console. The existence of a "dedicated remote play machine" that can only be used as a set with PS5 + wireless LAN requires a certain level of IT literacy to use it.""I understand that Portal is a kind of "explanatory product. On the other hand, there are many customers who want to play PS5 on something other than the TV in their living room. You may want to play game content that you do not want your family or children to see, or you may want to play it when you are not in front of the TV.""Traditionally, remote play simply involves attaching a PlayStation controller to someone else's display. In both cases, the controller is held in the hand, but the display side is different. I don't think it would be a perfect experience to hold it as an integrated device (even if you use separate peripherals). Also, games for PS5 are played with a TV-like screen + controller. It will be difficult to see on a small screen.""So, we decided to create something with a decent-sized screen that could be held and played with a full set of controllers. Portal is what we came up with. Visibility, screen size, and a full set of controllers are the main prerequisites.""It also means reducing delays. In remote play, the basic method is to connect the controller to a smartphone etc. via Bluetooth, but Portal uses an internal wired connection. Although negligible, it is advantageous in terms of operational latency. Since you only need to consider Wi-Fi latency, there is a great advantage of integration from end to end.""On the other hand, I didn't create it based on the mobile gaming PCs that are on the rise these days. Development began long before they were released into the world.""Rather than profitability, we want to increase the amount of time we can play with PS5. If you can play anywhere, I think some people will definitely spend more time playing games.""On the other hand, I think there is still room for consideration regarding the distance between humans and the screen, and visual issues, and there are many possibilities. You can learn a lot from actually making it.""Concept-wise, this is a product that we want to think about together with everyone. We want to receive and learn from customer feedback.""Games running on PS5 require "a certain amount of screen and a full set of controllers." We believe that providing this product to devices that cannot meet this quality would be deceiving customers.""Honestly, it's easy to check off the features. However, we would like to proceed while carefully considering whether this is a good idea and whether we can truly provide gameplay without any problems.""In terms of Portal, remote play and the cloud are only different in terms of where the server is, and there are no technical problems. We will start with remote play and proceed with verification."
