Media Molecule's last successful game was LittleBigPlanet 2. LBP2 released in January 2011. Over 11 years ago.
Tearaway on Vita was a small side-project made by a small team of 15 devs. It launched in November 2013.

Their main team, pretty much the whole studio, wasted over 11 years on Dreams.
Dreams is one of SIE's biggest failures in the history of PlayStation. It sold badly and the best Dreams creations are pretty much some bad tech demos. Nice to look at but barely any gameplay and way too short. Media Molecule themselves don't even know what to do with this "game". They tried to be the next Roblox or Mario Maker, but it's pretty much nothing at all. It's way to complicated and makes no fun at all.

Media Molecule pretty much doesn't exist. They disappeared 11 years ago. The last big thing was LittleBigPlanet 2 which was easier to use and knew what it was.
Dreams is a waste of time, money and resources. And I think Sony now knows this with being Shu gone (indies) and Hermen being the PS Studio boss.

So when will Sony shut down Media Molecue? I think next year. They will do some support for the "movie made in Dreams" A Winter’s Journey and then it's pretty much over.
I can't believe they survived for this long while Evolution Studio got shut down because of a messy Driveclub launch.
This is pretty much Shuhei Yoshida's fault.

Dreams failed because of Sony.

Can't blame the developer considering it is a competent product.

There is still a chance it can be a success by releasing it on PC and monetizing it.

Dreams flopped because of Media Molecule and Shuhei Yoshida.
Dreams got rebooted mid-development. Several times. And they still don't know what it is and what to do with it. They should have canned it years ago but Yoshida kept it alive and wasted even more SIE money.
Now that SIE has a new big british studio with Firesprite, Jim will finally close Media Molecule. And to be honest it's about time.

They wont.... cause of the leader of the studio winning an award and Jim Ryan favoring UK studios.

But here....I agree with you, they should have been shut down before Japan Studio.

Japan Studio got no justice.

(Disclaimer: I don't want any studios shut down in reality)

Mm, until it was fully incorporated in Sony, was a profit making enterprise, unlike Evolution.
They’re a smaller studio with relatively few overheads when it comes to staffing & other business costs.

They will not shut it down, it is the most creative studio Sony owns, also they made a new engine from scratch. It is all Sony fault, could had licence the engine, who knows maybe the game's tools will be available into PS VR as a drawing tool... Sony could had made the game available for PC, make the game as a service etc. This is just an example of creativity is not the same as profit.

why would they shut down one of their most creative studios for putting out a critically successful game? It's still one of the highest rated games on PS4. In fact outside of Santa Monica and Naughty Dog they probably have the best average reviews of any other sony studio.

If anything they just start working on a new co-op content creation IP or another Little Big Planet game. If any studio would be in danger of being shut down it would be Bend or Pixelopus. In an industry where Creativity and talent go for a premium, a studio like MM are a gold mine. Sony doesn't just obsess about sales, which is why they acquired Housemarque. they want diversity in their games catalogue moving forward.

“One of the big things we did in the last half of last year was we made Abbie the live product lead for Dreams,” says Reddy. “That’s been a really big step because the live [aspect] is its own product in a way…We’re on a big recruitment drive right now because to make the progress we want, we need programmers, and we need designers. What really excites me about all of this is Sony is really behind what we’re doing and are investing in the studio to grow.”

Sony won't shut down Media Molecule because all their projects have been successful: profitable, award winning and well reviewed. MM is growing like all the other internal studio and Hermen Hulst said he's proud of Dreams or Sackboy and that they'll continue making game like these ones.

If any studio would be in danger of being shut down it would be Bend or Pixelopus.
Bend or Pixelopus aren't in danger at all, they are both growing.

Days Gone may be at 10M+ units solds or more. After it Sony ported it to PC like other big sellers , they did help in probably the two most important Sony IPs: TLOU and Uncharted for some time until they got their next big project greenlighted, which a AAA new IP. A new IP is way riskier than a sequel of a super popular IP. PC port, working on their most important IPs and giving them a AAA new IP means Sony is super happy and confident with them.

Sony also is happy with Pixel Opus, grew it and now are making their first AAA game in collaboration with Sony Pictures Animation. More collaboration between divisions is one of the key corporation goals at Sony for the few next years, which means this project is very important for SIE so if they gave it to Pixel Opus means they are very confident.

They wont.... cause of the leader of the studio winning an award and Jim Ryan favoring UK studios.

Not "until", they mentioned several times that all Media Molecule games have been profitable (and won many awards with several different games). The opposite of Japan Studio, Evolution or post PS1 SCE Liverpool.

Media Molecule has relatively small teams and a good chunk of their staff were hired as recently gratuated juniors or other young junior talents like popular creators from LBP or Dreams. Which means low costs and not needing huge sales to go profitable.

Can't wait for your thread asking when Microsoft will close 343. Probably busy gathering all the evidence why they deserve to be closed, that's why it doesn't exist yet, right?

It's criminal what Sony has done to Dreams, it should be a massive success based on it's quality and potential.

Sony closing them down would be far worse than them closing Japan Studios.

Japan Studio was restructured, not closed. There's zero reasons to close an award winning studio whose all games are profitable and very well reviewed like Media Molecule.
It was closed for the most part. Team Asobi was just a fraction of it and no signs have been shown that anything else exists outside of Team Asobi.
