I don't understand why Playstation studios have been so silent this entire Gen.
In comparison to what other publisher?
What other publishers have managed to keep an output in 2020-2024 similar to what it was in 2010-2014?
Is this really a Playstation problem and not an industry problem? How many videogame developers, executives and journalists have come out to say there's a problem with ballooning
development time and costs? What else is there left to understand?
I know they had the pandemic as an excuse even though Insomniac wasn't effected.
Everyone was affected by COVID and full-remote, despite many people lying relentlessly about full remote bringing them higher productivity (in general it doesn't, and executives know it).
Insomniac just happened to have their development on Spider Man 2 and Ratchet&Clank more advanced. Those games are using essentially the same engine as their PS4 predecessors, and since Insomniac was brought in to develop the software components of the PS5's new I/O they included that as well. Same thing with God of War Ragnarok, for example.
Crazy to think in the ps2 Days Naughty Dog had released 3 Jak games in the first 4 years, while in the first 4 years of the ps5 they have literally released NOTHING.
We know they were making the TLoU Factions multiplayer for 3 years and then canceled it.
They
said they cancelled it because maintaining it would result in the whole studio becoming dedicated to a live service game, and that's not something they wanted to do. However, this only happened because Sony let it happen that way.
Had Sony projected hundreds of millions in annual revenue out of Factions, there's no way in hell they'd just tell Naughty Dog
yes you just spent 3 years of our most expensive studio to do something you're dropping and we're fine with that. The reality is that TLoU2 made people lose interest in the franchise.
So for the first 3 years, Naughty Dog wasted time on TLoU which after TLoU2 is probably a dying franchise because they bloated the sequel too much and bothered too many people with the social justice stuff.
None of these are from playstation studios
They're all 1st party games in the eyes of the console business.
It's been explained that 2nd party doesn't exist. For all accounting and financial decisions, it's not relevant if Sony paid for the game because the devs are on their payroll of if Sony contracted a studio to make it. They call 1st party to the former and the latter.
