I guess Sony forgot that they have to actually have to make and announce games for the ps5, Insomniac have been to only first party studio consistently releasing games (and no PC ports and TLOU remasters don't count). I don't understand why Playstation studios have been so silent this entire Gen. I know they had the pandemic as an excuse even though Insomniac wasn't effected.

Crazy to think in the ps2 Days Naughty Dog had released 3 Jak games in the first 4 years, while in the first 4 years of the ps5 they have literally released NOTHING.

We still have no word of a supposed showcase, what exactly is Sony's strategy here?

I think it's time we all make some noise and call Sony oout until they learn to better communicate with their fans.

They've basically dropped one giant title a month so far:
Helldivers 2
MLB the Show
Final Fantasy Rebirth
Rise of the Ronin
Stellar Blade

Then we saw PS5 releases of Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush, and for the degenerates among us, Sea of Thieves and Grounded.

Just like IGN to wait until Stellar Blade is in the rear view and Xbox's very first game since Starfield 8 months ago is around the corner to write this article.

But the answer is PlayStation is getting all the games this year, including the ones IGN thinks (or wants to believe) are exclusive to Xbox.

Man showing off games before they are in the last phase of development results in situations like lulblade 2, perfect dark, fable, state of decay 3 happening. Unless you want ammo for list wars on twitter, PS users are much better off because we actually have games to play albeit they are 2nd or 3rd party. They list games with hypotheticals and unicorn dreams, watch xbox show off more cgi trailers on june 9th for games that just went into production and will launch in 2029/2030

Did you forget about Wolverine,DS2,Marathon and Physint?

The fan made theory of only showing off games close to release was never real. Everyone here was acting like it was a fact

Not the topic, which you should know as its creator.

We can't keep making excuses for Playstation studios. We can't expect third parties to carry the Playstation while studios like Naughty Dog sit dick in hand for the entire generation

Clearly the output of internal games has slowed to a crawl this gen.

The question now is, will these games justify it when they are revealed?

They have multiple big studios that released their last games more than 4 years ago that are yet to announce their next games, that is a pretty unprecedented situation.

2024 has to be the year where they'll go big on game reveals otherwise what have they been doing? PC ports?

ND, Bend, Sucker Punch and Bluepoint all need to reveal their next games soon. People have been kept in the dark for too long and if it continues like this it will start to look like they'll skip this gen.

PS5 Pro, PS5 price cut, new game announcements, GTA6, the death of Xbox. Sony has a great hand to play and could bring postivity back to their brand like in the 2013~2016 days to elevate the PS5 beyond what the PS4 was able to do.

I want so much to be excited about the next 4 years and go out and upgrade to a PS5 Pro... why have they held back so much this gen?

Let's give Sony the benefit of the doubt.

  • Perhaps, a new strategy emerged just as COVID ended, which was meant to deal with filling in the gaps caused by WFH.
  • This strategy failed, and instead of filling gaps, it creates them and caused further delays.
  • A new strategy of GaaS was put forward and games were tooled to that.
  • That strategy failed, leading to a new vision and new CEOs.
  • Now we are four years into a gen and three years behind on software.
I believe Sony are holding releases close to their chest and have a lot planned for later on in the year to coincide with the PS5Pro launch, making it a soft relaunch of the console, complete with a throng of games.

I genuinely hope that this is the case and they knock it out of the park, the last good showcase was in 2021. I want to be hyped for Sony games again

All we have is hope.
If Sony fuck it this year before the Pro drops then they can kiss goodbye to this generation.

I don't understand why Playstation studios have been so silent this entire Gen.
In comparison to what other publisher?
What other publishers have managed to keep an output in 2020-2024 similar to what it was in 2010-2014?

Is this really a Playstation problem and not an industry problem? How many videogame developers, executives and journalists have come out to say there's a problem with ballooning development time and costs? What else is there left to understand?

I know they had the pandemic as an excuse even though Insomniac wasn't effected.
Everyone was affected by COVID and full-remote, despite many people lying relentlessly about full remote bringing them higher productivity (in general it doesn't, and executives know it).
Insomniac just happened to have their development on Spider Man 2 and Ratchet&Clank more advanced. Those games are using essentially the same engine as their PS4 predecessors, and since Insomniac was brought in to develop the software components of the PS5's new I/O they included that as well. Same thing with God of War Ragnarok, for example.

Crazy to think in the ps2 Days Naughty Dog had released 3 Jak games in the first 4 years, while in the first 4 years of the ps5 they have literally released NOTHING.

We know they were making the TLoU Factions multiplayer for 3 years and then canceled it.
They said they cancelled it because maintaining it would result in the whole studio becoming dedicated to a live service game, and that's not something they wanted to do. However, this only happened because Sony let it happen that way.
Had Sony projected hundreds of millions in annual revenue out of Factions, there's no way in hell they'd just tell Naughty Dog yes you just spent 3 years of our most expensive studio to do something you're dropping and we're fine with that. The reality is that TLoU2 made people lose interest in the franchise.

So for the first 3 years, Naughty Dog wasted time on TLoU which after TLoU2 is probably a dying franchise because they bloated the sequel too much and bothered too many people with the social justice stuff.

None of these are from playstation studios
They're all 1st party games in the eyes of the console business.
It's been explained that 2nd party doesn't exist. For all accounting and financial decisions, it's not relevant if Sony paid for the game because the devs are on their payroll of if Sony contracted a studio to make it. They call 1st party to the former and the latter.

I always get surprised how some playstation fans will write the biggest walltexts to try convincing people of why we dont need new sony studios announcements, like c'mon, its the middle of the gen and we dont have much to look forward from sony... And no, "1st party" from partners arent the same thing. At this point Im accepting announcements from games that are 2 or 3 years from its release just to balance with the bad news

How do you waste 3 years working on a multiplayer mode only to then decide "its too hard to monetise" what a gigantic waste of time and money. It's just poor management from Neil Druckmann

Ted Price seems to be the only one at Sony who knows what he is doing then, Insomniac have always been efficient thanks to him. I rather have sequels with the same engine then absolute silence for 5+ years.

i'll agree with IGN, Sony needs to announce games coming in 2025/2026 and 2027, we're in mid 2024, they're announcing games 2/3 years before release, so where are the announcements? we need the hype

Asobi needs to hurry up, how does an Astro game take almost as long to develop as Ghost of Tsushima 2?
They didn't even stop to port Astro Bot Rescue Mission to PSVR2.

Very few Sony internal studios have been productive this gen, I can only think of Insomniac actually. SSM, PD and Guerrilla just release crossgen game that were pretty much delayed PS4 titles, everyone else was pretty much a no show since 2020, not even bothering with announcing their next games.
