They started to release games on another platform during the previous gen already...
So minecraft? The other games were companies that had already released games that were on other platforms for the most part like the last hellblade, all zenimax games. Outside of minecraft and ori (which was owned and decided by that developer) what else was there that wasnt pre-existing

At this point, what I don't get is how they saw this happening and still pushed forward with the ABK acquisition.

Hey look at this downward spiral of a business that we have. Let's just throw SEVENTY BILLION DOLLARS at it.

Are Microsoft's execs idiots? What did they think was going to happen?
-Before the beginning of this generation Phil's plan to Satya was that streaming is the future for TV entertainment so why wouldnt that also translate to gaming? -So enter gamepass.
-Covid happens and subscription numbers raise exponentially, probably exceeding what they had planned for at the time.
-Phil also had access to daddys wallet because obviously game subscriptions and cloud was the future, and at the time i guess that couldve been believable. Especially to completely out of touch investors who dont have a clue about gaming.
-Somewhere while all of this is happening Phil and Booty are plotting on spending Sony out business with acquisitions.
-Enter Bethesda.
-2021 :Gamepass probably doing ok, PS5 shortages give the impression xbox is doing alot better than it should be doing
-2022: Enter ABK. PS5 shortages are ending, xbox had an abysmal software lineup, gamepass and xbox hardware starting to fall off a cliff now
-2023 :ABK deal is taking way longer than expected and is effecting the whole company, Xbox hardware falling like a rock, redfall and starfield both fail to grow game pass, FTC case drags all the big whigs into court.
ABK deal finally closes but now Xbox has spent so much money the bean counters are checking ever nook and cranny and find out how much its been smoke and mirrors all along. Gamepass and xbox hardware are missing targets by huge percentages and the entire business is unsustainable. Intrest rates and cash have also become more "expensive." Also since the dollar is so strong all business overseas now becomes more expensive as well, opposite for sony and nintendo since the yen is weak.
2024: Microosft CFO's hostile takeover xbox. Want to immediately go third party to recoup something as fast as possible.

Anyways theres alot more and i tried to cover the big ones but yeah. Bit off way more than they could chew and thats an understatement.

That's a good point but isn't it more expensive for Sony too? They have to pay the chips and PS5 parts in yen and the suppliers are all outside Japan?

Dollar is strong so that benfeits them for all business in the US but the Yen is weak so yes. IDK if it balances all out though.

No, I mean all their first parties on PC.

Gotcha, i still look at that as somewhat different with not in the console market and significantly higher barrier to entry for hardware cost. Multiplatform in true sense of consoles

Yeah but by definition PC is a different platform, especially if you don't even sell them within your ecosystem.

The Xbox Series has to be one the most embarrassing generations for any manufacturer, awful product. They missed on pretty much everything, completely misread the market and spent about $100B just to get kicked out of the console market (while the original plan was to outspend PlayStation out of business).

-Make a console(both HD consoles are just copies of each other besides resolution scaling)
-Have no compelling software(for the 2nd Gen in a row...)
-???
-Ayy, lmao...

Xbox Masterclass.

Its not true though, as he's assuming that the DC sold equally through all quarters, which is almost certainly untrue. As to toal sales, Saturn and DC didn't even reach 10 million so the Serieses have lapped them. He also gave DC only 26 months of life (important when dividing sales by quarter when it actually had a longer life both in production and on shelves.)

- Promise 2 SKUs, one that would play games at 4K and one that would play them at 1440p.
- Fail miserably at that and end up releasing one console full of botched games that can barely run and a more powerful one that still gets beat by a cheaper console in the PS5 DE.
- No compelling software for over 2 generations.
- Train people to not buy any games
- Train people to not even buy your service
- Pay for ports of games that your user base have no interest in playing
- Make sure they aren't building a library of games on your system
- Spend a lot of money on shills in a failed attempt to distort reality.
- Make acquisitions of struggling studios.
- Make massive acquisitions of struggling publishers clearly on the decline
- Build your entire brand around some douche bag executive.

I didn't feel like going that much in depth lmao, but yeah... Decision making could not be worse at Xbox.

Don't forget the fact that Microsoft is such a capitalist tech company that abuse the 18 month contractor thing like good US boys to save costs.
But now games take like 5-6 years and the brain drain and chaos that causes long term projects like that simply is not conclusive to making great games. Like, studios that they have acquired that have seen headcount growth at Xbox are going to realize that they've over scoped for what they can deliver due to having to retrain a bunch of people all the fucking time. That one directive is absolutely crippling poison in terms of allowing teams to ship great titles.
They can't change it though because it's a company policy.

Just imagine the morale at studios after the ATVI + Bethesda cuts.
People at XGS proper now looking behind their backs thinking they're going to be the next to be pruned.

Did anyone honestly expect the xbox to sell well this gen? Even the 360 was still outsold by the ps3 and came in last place

I thought the Series would do better than the Xbox One, which I felt was not a very high bar considering the investments they done in the latter years of the One.

But they can't even manage that.
