Destiny 2 developer Bungie is the latest PlayStation studio to have layoffs. Full scope isn't clear yet, but CEO Pete Parsons emailed the company.

Dont they got a billion dollar retention plan when they got acquired? What happened with that money? Remember they got acquired last year so it wasn't even a long time ago.

Yes, they had a lot of money set aside for retention....

They are still hiring, I believe.

We have to see how things look overall... DMG said that this was a result of managerial incompetence and it echoes of past things he saw at Bungie.

There were over 1000 people at Bungie, so it's hard to know what exactly is going on.

4 month delay for The Final Shape (Destiny expansion) and Marathon to 2025....

Paul Tassi said it's more on the publisher side that cutbacks are but he didn't say that is definitive.

Add all these sony layoffs on top of project cancellations and shrinking profit, the future is not looking to bright. And most important as gamers we still don't have a 2024 first party roadmap to look forward to.

I thought Sony added-to the price, in retention fees? What was the point?

I think I'm gonna go Nintendo next gen
Cuz sony are in the verge of bankruptcy imo

Sony have more cash on hand than Nintendo and Sony makes over twice what Nintendo make in profits annually.

There is no panic.... they are overly investor focused right now, PlayStation used to lose billions during the PS3 era and Sony was really broke then.

This is nothing but greed being put above delivering the best they can for customers.

This thread does a good job of showing why a "disagree" rating that isn't haha needs to exist. How many "layoff" news stories this year have we seen that ended up being fewer than ten people or just regular post-launch trimming? People in this thread have said that Destiny 2 is dead, that the GaaS push is dead, that this is Sony reversing course on this or that. Its equally likely that none of that is true and definitely likely that most of it is not true.

Delay worked in Witch Queen’s favor but it also shifts their content roll out 4 months. Marathon probably feb 25 earliest then .

Also while witch Queen’s delay was quality control related Final Shape’s seems workforce related due to cuts.

Possibly, I look forward to hearing what's going on.

I think their GaaS is not going well.
Deviation project struggling
Factions 2 struggling
One of Bungie's projects likely failing
A specific team at Visual Arts was likely supporting one of these 3 failures.

Consolidation, baby.

Where are the people rooting for it?
I like the idea, if the outside company being bought fits with the company buying them, and/or they can produce better games by coding to the metal/being exclusive (be refined instead of compensating for multiplatform sky's with their parities and drawbacks). But I don't think my use-scenario here is typical of "consolidation" itself, I think I moreso like "synergistic exclusivity". Don't mind me, I'm stoned lol.
