Destiny 2 developer Bungie is the latest PlayStation studio to have layoffs. Full scope isn't clear yet, but CEO Pete Parsons emailed the company.

Mostly vertical integration but also a lot of cost savings... you'll notice they cut Michael Salvatori, the music director / composer and he is very beloved but was very expensive to retain.
Yea Bungie even sued o'Donnell for bullshit reasons and before that appearently he is shares Sowell books is the reason they also cut him off?

Great shit Jimbo brought here lol.

Salvatori leaving is a huge L. He’s 70 but they probably don’t want to pay. Final Shape ost is recorded and they got new talent on board for a few years now. Sad to see… consistently best part of the game have been all the osts.

Embracer Group issued the most rounds of layoffs at seven across its subsidiaries following a restructuring program, with affected studios including Crystal Dynamics, Beamdog, Rainbow Studios, Volition, Gearbox Publishing, and Campfire Cabal.

The highest number of employees affected by layoffs in one parent company was Unity at 900, which saw two rounds of layoffs this year with 600 employees laid off in January and nearly 300 people let go in May.
Epic Games followed close behind, having laid off 830 employees last month with British studio Mediatonic among them. Amazon Games also saw a high number of employees terminated from Twitch following a round of layoffs earlier in the year followed by another last week.

An unknown number of games people were affected by mass redundancies at larger firms that operate in other industries, such as 10,000 at Microsoft (including Bethesda Game Studios and 343 Industries), 21,000 at Meta, 7,000 at Disney, and 9,000 at Amazon.

Nobody cares about that. There is so much vitriol surrounding this news and people are all blaming and pointing fingers at Sony. It's just another way to vent because their ass is getting plowed by the PS5.

Like it's the same people that were cheering in the Actiblizz thread. Suddenly consolidation and acquisition are bad.

Sad to see bungie imploding. Sony bet the farm on them and gaas and it hasn’t worked out. Jim Ryan should be escorted out of there immediately.

Far from imploding.

More like trimming the fat which Bungie don’t need anymore since they have Sony.

Made sense when they were independent.

PR, Lawyers, Promotion Etc can be handled by Sony.

It’s sad to see people lose their jobs but the majority of them weren’t even developers.

Yea I saw the layoff mostly at social media handlers(god that post) and community handlers.

I don't think those people bring any values

Yep especially when Sony can do it and have those roles.

If Insomniac, Naughty Dog, SSM and other Playstation studios don’t need these roles then why do Bungie?

Them being independent of Playstation studios is irrelevant.

Why do people keep saying GAAS isn’t working? They literally haven’t released any games yet or even greatly demoed any of them.

Bungie has only been a part of sony for a little over a year. Did people think some tsunami of multiplayer games would launch as soon as Bungie signed the papers?

The wish fullfillment of people that just want single player games is going to be a monkeys paw situation when sony lose more third party publishers and can’t sustain their own platform.

If a game is delayed 2 years out there is no way they gonna keep all that staff till then, they gonna cut the fuck out of labor, and slowly ramp it back up over the next 2 years. With Totoki (CFO, the conservative type) learning and slowing taking over SIE he is gonna make a name for himself like all leaders do when they take over a part of the company or become CEO.

When i was in retail every time a new executive took over my region the 1st thing them assholes did was cut labor.

Sucks for the devs, hope everyone gets back up soon.

have people been living with their head in the sand the past year while the entire industry has been seeing massive lay offs?

This didn’t just start today. 6000 game developers lost their jobs this year and its probably not slowing down anytime soon

Did these companies bloat up and are merely shedding? Impossible to tell without head count over a period of time.
