Update 3/23/24 Second trailer posted

Following the gargantuan Insomniac leak that hit the company hard a couple of months ago, content is still being pulled out that’s revealing new, in-development, and cancelled projects, products, and concepts. Most recently, users stumbled upon a trailer for the cancelled multiplayer game, Spider-Man: The Great Web, and promptly leaked it online.

This was supposed to be a five-person multiplayer game built on a live service foundation, but it was struck down by Sony – as revealed by the Insomniac leaks. In the leaked trailer for The Great Web – which looks incredibly polished – we get a glimpse at what that product might have looked like.

In the short trailer that was leaked online today, Spider-Man: The Great Web is exposed in full, with the video showcasing incredible multiplayer elements that would have pit five players against the Sinister Six in New York City. It would have been built around a multiverse model, which was supposedly busted open by Scarlet Witch, and there would have been character customisation options leading to a diverse array of superheroes coming together to fight the big bad guys.

Here’s the dialogue from the trailer:

‘New York City. Nothing in the whole world I wouldn’t do for this big, beautiful apple. One moment you’re scarfing down a slice from Vinnie’s, the next – you’re stopping a super-villain prison break. Sometimes you can swing it as a lone wolf, but you’re way better off with some friends. I’ve seen the Sinister Six before… But never so methodical – so savage. I don’t think I’m going to be enough this time, guys. But together, we just might be.’
Months ago, a series of images leaked from The Great Web, but this is the first time we’ve seen a trailer surface. It’s narrated by Yuri Lowenthal – who voices Peter Parker – and it looks ready for market. It genuinely appears to be a trailer for a product that could have been released days after it was revealed – it’s bizarre and heartbreaking for Spider-Man fans the world over that the product won’t see the light of day.

Sony pivots to GaaS spends years working on them in secret and then cancels most of them. What a complete failure.

They pretty much wasted a significant chunk of their developments efforts with this type of stuff this gen, with likely more cancellations to come.

They are aiming for the big gaas game that will earn them a lot of money Fortnite style. Game casualties are a calculated risk for them.

And in tht they will lose more money than they will gain. Those one hit l, gaas wonders happen so sporadically.

I get stuff gets cancelled. But how do you go through years of development only to then realize, shit, this won't work? Shouldn't that be done much sooner?

it's funny how some people act as authorities in this shit and are consistently wrong, while this guy keeps being mostly (not always) right.

The legacy of Jim Ryan is the gift that keeps on giving:
  • The Last of Us Online cancelled and people laid-off at Naughty Dog (1st GaaS project gone)
  • Closing of London Studio, with dozens losing their job (2nd GaaS project gone)
  • Cancellation of Spider-Man multiplayer projects and now layoffs(occurred at some point in the last year, 3rd GaaS project gone)
  • Guerrilla hit with layoffs, another studio that had been working on GaaS (probably 4th project gone)

This pretty much confirms that some layoffs at Insomniac were likely related to the cancellation of these projects - And people saying that Guerrilla layoffs have nothing to do with their live service game... They are in for a rude awakening in the next few months.

I get stuff gets cancelled. But how do you go through years of development only to then realize, shit, this won't work? Shouldn't that be done much sooner?

You have a head of studios called Hermen Hulst that spends more time holidaying than actually working.

And how do you do that to so many games in such a short span of time? The Last of Us Factions, London Studios game, Spider Man multiplayer, not to mention all the MIA games like Fairgame$, Concord and Marathon, that they are unable to even show.

Of all their GaaS games (that became the bulk of their development efforts) barely anything is coming out, it's a miracle that they didn't decide to cancel Helldivers 2 saying that it had no chance to succeed.

He spends a lot of time canceling projects and closing studios. Absolutely nonsensical stuff like Until Dawn remake, Uncharted Legacy of Thieves and TLoU Remake he doesn't cancel tho.

So let's just look at a recap of the legacy of Jimmy and Hermie™
  • Massive bet in live service games that has backfired spectacularly, with multiple games being cancelled after years of work;
  • Closure of Manchester Studio, PixelOpus, London Studio, and the massive gutting and destruction of Japan Studio;
  • Failed bet in PC ports that sell on average 3 copies and a tuna sandwich each;
  • Zero PS Studios (actual studios) games releasing in 2024 - The only ones releasing are partnership level games that were being worked on BEFORE they took over. Since 2023 they have released more PC ports than actual studios games for the PS5, which is just shameful
  • Failing their sales targets by 16%, or 4M units, which is absolutely massive, especially at a time when Xbox is dead. The PS5 is still tracking behind the PS4 launch aligned AFAIR
And then we look at Helldivers 2 and... it wasn't even their doing. The only live service game released thus far was in development long before they took over.

These guys killed playstation and they still have cheerleaders.

No wonder Spiderman released in the state it did it this game was being worked on alongside it.

What a spectacular failure thus generation has turned into. Stuff like this could have been great for the ecosystem of a console starved for 1st party content.

Probably the same reason TLOU Online was cancelled - Insomniac would have to turn into a studio exclusively dedicated to live service games, like Naughty Dog would have to (they mentioned it themselves).

And if by any instance Horizon Online releases, Guerrilla is fucked because they will be stuck in that one game - I'd have zero expectations of a new Horizon game other than that one for a decade, unless work is well under way.

Work is supposedly under way for Horizon 3.
Sony should really given them the resources to do both. As in make there online games and make there single player games, thats how you expand. I dont understand how they didnt see that from the start….
CEO’s and game managers arent as smart as everyone portrays them to be….

There is also Firesprite and Media Molecule imploding as well as the partnerships with Deviation and the KOTOR remake getting nuked.

Not to mention that the canceled live service games wasted valuable time of some of their best studios like Naughty Dog and Insomniac.

I would also add the loss of long time close partners like SEGA/Atlus that somehow still are all in on Xbox at this point.

The last Bend game released in 2019, with no new game even announced 5 years later. 4 years since the last games from Bluepoint, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule and Team ASOBI released, all still with nothing new to even show/announce.

This duo work is very reminiscent of what Phil Spencer has been doing since 2009 for Xbox.

They have no sense. Tlou mp however it may have looked would have been an mtx machine when implemented.
Nah, they had to follow Bungie advise, the most toxic and nonsensical live service studio ever. They want PlayStation to be synonymous with player abuse and FOMO.

than i have a question. why even makes those type of games and invest massively if you are not getting through it?

like, do they agree that 200M SP games are more profitable and more sustainable than GaaS? because it looks like that. why you cancel your own pushed direction otherwise? it makes damn no sense.

it looks more, like Jimbo/Hulst, jumped the gun with PC and GaaS, didn't think through any of this... man..
