Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has claimed Sony’s bid to thwart the Call of Duty maker’s sale to Microsoft won’t be held against the PlayStation maker in the long-term.

In an email sent to Activision employees on Tuesday, Kotick provided an update on the status of the $69 billion deal in which he called Sony’s recent behaviour “disappointing”.

His message referenced Sony’s recent claim that Microsoft could release deliberately buggy versions of Call of Duty games on PlayStation consoles should it acquire Activision.

“We all know our passionate players would be the first to hold Microsoft accountable for keeping its promises of content and quality parity,” he said. “And, all of us who work so hard to deliver the best games in our industry care too deeply about our players to ever launch sub-par versions of our games.”

For its part, Microsoft has repeatedly claimed it has offered Sony a 10-year, legally enforceable contract to make each new Call of Duty game available on PlayStation the same day it comes to Xboxwith full content and feature parity.

Last month, Activision Blizzard’s EVP of corporate affairs and CCO, Lulu Cheng Meservey, claimed SIE president Jim Ryan had told Microsoft and Activision: “I don’t want a new Call of Duty deal. I just want to block your merger.”

Kotick also seemingly referenced this comment in his email to staff on Tuesday.

“Sony has even admitted that they aren’t actually concerned about a Call of Duty agreement—they would just like to prevent our merger from happening,” he wrote. “This is obviously disappointing behavior from a partner for almost thirty years, but we will not allow Sony’s behavior to affect our long term relationship.

“PlayStation players know we will continue to deliver the best games possible on Sony platforms as we have since the launch of PlayStation.”

Kotick’s update on the deal noted that significant hurdles have recently been cleared.

Last week, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it no longer believed that the acquisition would significantly reduce competition in the console gaming space.

The watchdog said on Friday that it had updated its provisional findings after receiving fresh evidence that alleviated some of its concerns about the deal, most notably the worry that Microsoft would make Call of Duty an Xbox exclusive.

That's very interesting. Kotick gives two very revealing points.

1. Sony doesn't give a shit about the COD deal! They're just trying to stop the merger.
This means that Sony would have had to deal with a scenario of losing COD already. Because if Sony were sooooo dependent on COD, Sony would not risk losing COD. But Sony says: we are not interested in the deal! We want to end the merger.

2. Kotick won't let Sony break off the business relationship with AB. Why doesn't he want to? Quite simply, if Sony is in a bad way, they can kick AB off their platform because Sony had a disagreement with AB and a business relationship is no longer sustainable. In addition, AB goes public with private conversations with Sony, which really abuses Sony's trust. So Sony has good reasons to give AB the go-ahead. So what if Sony kicks COD immediately after the takeover? Sony would be a financial hit. Will it kill Sony? Let's be honest, how can a 100 billion company depend on a 1 billion IP? Will it hurt? Yeah, but will Sony handle it? Sure. But what does it mean for COD to lose millions of gamers in one fell swoop? Most players are on the PS. AB and MS would not be able to react that quickly to compensate for this loss, and if Sony had an alternative in the back, with the right marketing (Sony is king of marketing, from which COD itself has benefited enormously), then Sony might be able to keep the COD players on their platform and that would be the death of COD. It is pure gambling and an animal bitch move by Sony. Personally, I would totally celebrate such a move. If Sony hasn't let AB drop like a hot potato, why is Kotick worried about the future relationship with Sony?

Jim Ryan had told Microsoft and Activision: “I don’t want a new Call of Duty deal. I just want to block your merger.”
If this quote is true, then Jim really is ready to act.

Microsoft President Brad Smith said that the deal Sony currently has with Activision Blizzard will “expire next year”.
Modern Warfare II DLC (2023)
Call of Duty (2024)

It is not clear whether they will end the relationship immediately or after 2024.

Outside mobile PS is the biggest market for ABK. ABK represents a tiny portion of Sony's game/console revenue. So Sony is in a more powerful position for a negotiation.

Sony rejects the MS deals because Sony wants to keep CoD forever, not only for 3 or 10 years.

To lose CoD would hurt PS or would cause Sony any meaningful negative effect? No, but for them is better to keep CoD than to lose it.

In any case, Sony will release in a handful years multiple games that could act as CoD replacements, and they already have CoD secured for a handful years more. Also, CoD is a tiny portion of their business and are growing in many areas, so can live perfectly without them.

They should stop sales of ABK content. If you already have it you can continue to play the game but you wont be able to buy it on psn. Then sony can just wait out the gen and drop cod altogether move on without giving ms a dime. Make their own shooters and keep trying until they get a hit.

Sony won't remove it, but they can stop all promoting of it. Especially if in the near future they have an AAA alternative developed internally.

Yes but it would be truly glorious. I mean you never know, it’s a possibility. I think Sony doesn’t want to bow down, even as a corporation they have some pride. Playstation was literally born because Nintendo embarrassed them in public and they (especially Ken Kutaragi) wanted to take revenge. Honestly I would love it, they would signal to others potential buyouts by Microsoft, that Sony would ditch them, for not wanting to participate in contributing making Microsoft’s Gamepass successful.

"Microsoft offered Sony (the dominant console leader for well over a decade, with 80% market share) a 10 year agreement on far better terms than Sony would ever get from us."

I can't look at Kotick. He's circus ugly. He looks like a burns victim who had a face transplant with William Shatner, and then had a stroke.
