According to a now-deleted tweet from a Remedy employee, somewhere around 23% of PC players won’t be able to play the game.

To be clear, the employee didn’t say that number explicitly. In response to the outcry over the Alan Wake 2 system requirements, the employee shared that only cards with mesh shaders are officially supported, meaning any Nvidia 10-series or AMD RX 5000-series GPUs or older aren’t officially supported.

I did some quick math on Steam’s latest hardware survey, and that accounts for somewhere between 23% and 25% of participants, depending on if you count integrated graphics or not. The number is much larger if you include Nvidia’s GTX 16-series graphics cards, which support mesh shaders, but fall below the minimum requirements for Alan Wake 2.

The developer says that cards without mesh shader support will still run the game, but you’ll likely experience much lower performance. It points to the example of an RX 5700 XT and RX 6600 showing a large gap in Alan Wake 2 despite having similar performance otherwise. Strict mesh shader support, according to the developer, came up after the team experienced “lots of perfs issues and bugs” with a vertex shader path, leading the development team to officially drop support for it.

If we could only get it closer to 100%

I was told that PC's were much stronger and better than consoles...musta been a lie.
PCs are indeed much stronger and better than consoles, but not the PCs of the ones who claimed this.

I remembered seeing people bragging about PCs superiority but asking why ER is running like crap on their.... GTX 1650 laptop

By the way mesh shaders, where have I heard about this before.
Somewhere along RDNA 2?
😂😂😂 yes along with velocity architecture, machine learning, sampler feedback streaming, infinity cache, VRS... 😂🤣 All those buzzwords disappeared when Starfield was announced to be 30fps.

I mean a pc can be on a budget too. Most games will play on an old laptop (most as in like older than the laptop lol.) Pcs can kinda be That way too but if you want to get games to work you could look at low spec gamers YouTube channel for info lol.

Oh I know, I'm just making fun of the blanket statement that "PC is better"..

Yeah I was kidding mostly myself. Don’t think people are going to disable textures and skybox to play monster hunter world on a pentium and most of the old games are plates through emulation or Whatever old discs are Lying around.

people still using Pentium for gaming? Is it that turd now only used in office now?

I remembering troubleshooting to play Stalker SOC. The game ran like shit because of single core. Going to 2 Quad, replace the whole board. Buying an actual ATI card. Shit expensive but worth jt.

PC indeed needs a Crysis push to move hardware.
But I don’t think Alan Wake 2 is it.
The trailer use dark areas to hide its shortcoming.

Horror games look good because dark contrast makes the game look better than it is

The amount of negative PR that is coming these days for games on PC.

Reap what you sow I guess. Devs support the platform, which in turn grows the consumer base, which in turn makes the consumer base demand more and whine more if not catered to.

PC gaming has declined drastically since DLSS came out.
