There’s been an update. This number DOES NOT include Sony employees who are working on bungie projects. Also, no one has been rehired. I’m back to assuming this means “gummy bears” has gone into full dev or prepping for marathon’s service aspirations.

The source of that number is the MS agent Paul Tassi, so maybe it's a fake number.

In LinkedIn Bungie has 1591 people and different job websites that estimate workforce mention numbers of above 1500-1600. Or maybe his number is real and adding contractors it's around 1500-1600.

So, in other words @Yurinka may be correct with his overlap assumptions.
Press release of Sony mentioning Bungie had "more than 900 employees" 2 years ago when they announed the acquisition:

Jason Shredder mentioning 3 months ago they were firing around 100 people going down from around 1200 (to around 1100):

current assumption is this now includes the PlayStation Studios talent now working for Bungie. So, in other words @Yurinka may be correct with his overlap assumptions.
IGN said "IGN has now heard of layoffs impacting the community team, art, engineering, recruiting, legal, audio, QA, creative studios, and IT":

Big publishers like Sony have their global internal Community, art outsourcing, recruiting, legal, audio, QA and IT teams that support all their gamedev teams. So the teams don't need to have a most of these people in their own studios, saving costs and ensuring everyone an jump from a project they complete to another one just after, reducing firings.

When asked about the Bungie layoff during the most recent fiscal report QA, the Sony CEO said Bungie fired around 100 people and was someting that Bungie already decided back when the acquisition was made.
