Does no one find it concerning that PS5 sales are struggling to keep up with the nearly 8 year old Nintendo Switch?

Will the Switch outsell the PS5 this holiday season?

PS5 sales have completely cratered, last quarter the PS5 "shipped" 2.4m units, while the Switch sold 2.1m units. These are official figures from the earnings reports of both companies.

In the month of September, the PS5 sold about 1m units worldwide and the Switch sold about 800k. A nearly 8 year old console, on its last leg, is selling 80% as well as the current gen "hot console", does no one find that even a little bit pathetic? I do. And that's with several big game releases to bolster the PS5 while Switch had pretty much nothing.

There's a very real chance that that the Switch can outsell the PS5 this holiday season, and I predict that will happen. If that does happen, then..... I don't even need to say it.

And please don't use the excuse, "Switch is only $300, PS5 is $500".... the Switch is almost 8 years old and PS5 is only 4 years old. It has never been discounted once and is still outpacing any Sony console ever made. The PS4 in it's last year was $199 and could barely sell 6m YTD, let alone 1m a month.

Sony and their fans will never admit it, but deep down they know the truth because they're all saying the same thing, "GTA 6 will boost PS5 sales". Both Sony and their fans are praying for 1 game to be their savior. This is really sad, and how does Sony respond to these plummeting sales? By announcing one of their only exclusives is getting ported to PC, on it's 1 year anniversary where fans were expecting DLC no less.....oh and their last game of the year, Lego Horizon, is also coming to Switch/PC DAY ONE. Wow.

It's like Sony has completely given up on console sales, just like how Xbox has given up. Which is why I said that Sony have positioned themselves as the new Xbox:
Sony has positioned themselves as the new Xbox.

PS5 = Xbox One
PS5 Pro = Xbox One X
PS6 = Xbox Series X
(Alleged PS6 handheld = Xbox Series S)

Let me know what you think. If you'll respond, please answer these 2 questions as well as the poll. Thank you.

1. Do you find it pathetic or at least concerning that the PS5 can barely keep up with an almost 8 year old console?
2. Do you think the PS5 will outsell the Switch this holiday season?

Don't think Switch will sell more especially if Nintendo will say something about Switch 2 soon but PS5 sales should be higher than what they are. If Xbox is down why isn't PlayStation up? Well because since August 7th 2020 Sony keeps telling everyone that you don't need a PlayStation anymore. It's just that simple.

Switch 2 announcement would boost Switch 1 sales if anything. I know a lot of collectors, enthusiasts, and even casuals are ramping up their Switch game purchases due to FOMO. They're worried that a certain model or game might stop being made.

People who never had an OLED are getting OLEDs, people who never had the lite are getting lites. Special edition consoles included. They’re getting the games they missed out on as well.

You’re 100% right, the Switch is still selling amazingly well because of its massive back catalog of true exclusives. Something the PS5 just doesn’t have since nearly the entire library is on PC and PS4. It’s crazy that Sony and their apologists believe exclusive games lose their value after only a year or 2.

I lose sleep every night.
Don’t respond if you don’t care or have nothing to add… This is a forum for actual discussions, not your boyfriends post on Facebook.

PS5 hasn't seen a price cut yet and there isn't much in the way of killer IP yet (as strange as that sounds).

COD is cross-gen, same for all the sports titles. GTA VI might be the first next-gen game to really move units.

We haven't had any current gen exclusives that incentivise you to buy the hardware outside of Spider-Man 2...which was kinda eh

One of the reasons why I am getting sick of this site is because of the clown trolls that probably got banned, only to make another account. This site needs to be like Era and be more strict with account vetting. So you mean to tell me that a 4 year old $500 console that hasn’t gotten a price drop, is struggling to outsell a $300 console? Nooooo! You don’t say. s/.

damn, almost like a console that cost 200 dolars with games that are nowhere else to play and really good games makes you sold a lot of consoles through the years. Sony shouldn't have take all those california executives. Also to add, Nintendo, Xbox, Steam, and lots of shops have regional pricing in latam which helps a lot when deciding a new console. You cant compete when a game on ps5 where i live is 120 dolars with taxes when xbox or nintendo or steam have the same game at 50 dolars with taxes (this is an example of pricing, do not take seriously). It's a matter that really influence when deciding to buy a new console or going full pc

Combination of a few things: No current killer apps, lots of competition from other platforms + mobile, near the end of a generation, price of PS5 is high compared to the competition.

We know all of this, you haven't answered the questions.

Why are you triggered over someone asking a simple question and presenting facts? By "be more like Era", you mean you want to turn this place into more of an echo chamber than it already is? Hah.

Bruh Herman and co stopped caring so why should we bother lol, they are putting all their eggs into the games influenced by Cuckmann and co in california. 1-2 bombs from ND and SSM and this whole house of cards falls down. The company abandoned its roots and no one is ever successful after abandoning their roots, 5-10 yrs the playstation will go the way of the walkman and this time it will be due to self sabotage

Xbox sales are lower than ever in the companies history, but PS5 still can't make up the difference.... That is much more of a boost than Switch's lower price.

Sony should have led by example by not doing any crossgen bullshit. But they didn't so why should third parties? And as usual we need Nintendo to bring back common sense and show how it's done
Third parties want to still make Switch games? Awesome but we're all in on Switch 2.

No! The Switch is far cheaper, and you can buy almost three Switch kites for the total price of one PS5 disc edition. 20% of households in the U.S. own at least two switches. Nowhere near as many families would have multiple PS5s. The switch also had a strong COVID, mostly missed because of stock issues. It also generates far less $ per user because switch owners buy fewer games and spend less on add-on content. Nintendo's profits were down almost 55% in the first quarter because game sales underperformed on Switch despite selling lots of hardware. Digital content was down by 32% because outside of the bull💩 games, there isn't as much revenue coming from 3rd party games or content because many of the big 3rd party games don't release on Switch. The switch is hitting the Wii problem. Its hardware has saturated the market, but its content isn't moving, aside from a few bug titles. Switch is a device for Indys and shovelware. To justify the Switch 2, Nintendo will have to abandon the Switch, so they are trying to encourage 3rd parties to support it with remasters. Because of rising costs, Switch 2 will have a higher price point than a Nintendo console. It will face more competition from other handhelds that already do everything better, with no COVID bump, worsening the global economic situation. Still, it won't be capable of running a lot of 3rd party content without massive compromises. With PS and Xbox handhelds on the way, Nintendo has increased competition in the only market in which it still has a foothold in.

It will sell more than Switch but that shouldn't be the bar.

This is a conscious decision from Sony, they have prioritized profits above all else, even if it means sales erosion and negative long-term growth imo

Next time please use better formatting, this is a bit difficult to read.

Of course the Switch will be down in software sales...it's in its final year, and TOTK released last year which sold over 20m in a week. Lmao.... that means nothing. And even with their revenue being much lower than Sony's, their profits are still much higher.
Nintendo will have to abandon the Switch
"Nintendo will have to abandon the Switch"....moving on from your most successful console to ensure the success of your next console is hardly "abandoning" it. That's like saying you abandoned your successful independent 21 year old son to focus taking care of your younger children. It's very disingenuous and shows you don't really have a leg to stand on.

It will face more competition from other handhelds that already do everything better
What competition? The Switch sells more in 1 month than the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go, and AYANEO do combined in an entire year. LMAO. Xbox's handheld will also flop, and Sony isn't doing a handheld unless you mean the PS Portal....Which is inherently a niche product. If they do do a handheld, they'll be embarrassed yet again.

Still, it won't be capable of running a lot of 3rd party content without massive compromises.
Bad assumption, the Series S has ensured the Switch 2 will be able to play everything. Docked will be equivalent to the Series S power but with DLSS, which is superior to PSSR. Not to mention that devs/publishers love the Switch because of it's potent install base that buy games more than any other install base. They already bend over backwards to get games on the weak Switch, so they'll definitely focus on the much more powerful and sophisticated Switch 2. So yeah, it's safe to say the Switch 2 will have pretty much everything.

It will outsell the Switch this holiday and yes, it is embarrassing.

PlayStation is complacent AF. Hermen should not be leading WWS and Jimbo's live-service push truly fucked things up.

As you can see here, all consoles have a yearly sales curve, so after their peak year (PS5 had it last fiscal year, so in the current year and the next ones are expected to decrease YoY) their yearly sales decrease as normal in their sales life cycle:

image.png

Meaning, PS5 sales aren't 'cratering', they are just following their normal sales cycle. Nothing rare there. That behavior is expected for a console in its current 5th fiscal year (next month will turn 4 years old).

Launch aligned PS5, when accumulated is performing well against Switch:

image.png

These graphs are per fiscal year, so they are updated until March 2024 and will be updated with March 2025 numbers.

Since both PS5 and Switch are in the second part (post peak year) of their life cycle, both are expected to sell in the current fiscal year less than they did in the previous one, as they estimated (18M for PS5 and 13.4M for Switch). Same goes with the Christmas period, PS5 should less than it did last year but still should sell more than Switch.

If we add to these graphs Sony's projection of 18M PS5 for the current FY and Nintendo's projection of 13.5M Switch for the current FY the graphs would look like this instead:
image.png

image.png

In accumulated sales launch aligned PS5 would be in April's 1st only a bit under Switch (which now has the handheld market almost in exclusivity), PS4 and (PS5 will outsell its total sales in a couple years or so) Wii. PS5 would be outselling the rest of consoles in gaming history launch aligned.

So it's doing great, specially considering it had the supply constrains issues, that it couldn't cut its price and instead had to increase, that there is a big economical crisis/inflation in many crountries, that half of the PS active userbase is still on PS4 because they have enough with the GaaS that still support and the titles that still are being releasing there (the volume of users there is unusual at this point of the generation).

The PS4>PS5 transition should be bumped once the top selling series (GTA, CoD, EA FC, Fortnite, NBA2K, AC...) stop supporting PS4 and become cuttent gen only and also if they find a way to price cut the console (hard because the components or shipment costs keep rising). Such bump would/will put PS5 launch alligned ahead of PS4, Wii and maybe even Switch in accumulated sales.

PlayStation is complacent AF. Hermen should not be leading WWS and Jimbo's live-service push truly fucked things up.
Hermen is being the most successful WWS head: with first parties broke launch sales records with titles released in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Highly increased the manpower of most of their teams and acquired several great teams, more than doubling their size.

Regarding GaaS (the 12 GaaS initiative and most of the related developments started before Jim and Hermen), Gran Turismo, MLB, Destiny and Helldivers are very successful.

1. Do you find it pathetic or at least concerning that the PS5 can barely keep up with an almost 8 year old console?
It's nonsensical to call it pathetic and isn't concerning.

PS5 is performing among the best selling consoles ever and normally according its point on its life cycle, even if had many things against it I mentioned before, and Switch is on track to become the best selling console ever and it has the entire handheld market for itself.

2. Do you think the PS5 will outsell the Switch this holiday season?
As mentioned above, yes.
