Sales split is not as bad as I thought it would be. I do think Sony should focus on regaining market share in japan. Beating Nintendo there would be difficult rn not that they shouldn't try. More importantly, they should try and lock Steam from gaining any traction in Japan and this could mean releasing a portable and better prices for hardware across the board. Steam is not your friend @Sony!!

Not even sure that would be enough but it would help, unfortunately:
1) Sony will not buy Square Enix
2) Even if they did Square doesn't own Dragon Quest entirely, it's co-owned with Yuji Horii and he might have something against abandoning the best selling console for his series
The Square Enix Group includes a global network of leading development studios located in North America, Europe and Japan. The Group boasts a valuable portfolio of intellectual property including: FINAL FANTASY®, DRAGON QUEST® and the legendary SPACE INVADERS®.

I think Yuji has ownership rights. Not the digital rights?
I doubt they can release a Dragon Quest game without him and Vice Versa. Square actually internally made the last few DQ’s unlike before

It's the third biggest PS5 launch in the region.

As for the sales split. The Switch is at 34 million, the PS5 is at 6 million and DQ has always leaned more towards Nintendo.

I mean, what did you expect to happen?

The only way Sony can get some share back is paying and fully funding 3D DQ like XII. Make it more serious but keep it turn-based though modernise it. Like Metaphor did it turn-based but with a modern approach. That’s the only way I could see Sony gaining back some momentum on DQ.

Metaphor nailed JRPG combat mechanics.

Turn-based, no random encounters and real time instakill for weaker enemies.

Perfect combo.

DQ 11 was well received and was basically a Home console exclusive for 2 years with PS4.

During that time people were praising PS4 and the return of JRPG’s and Japanese studios compared to the PS3/360 gen where everyone was saying Japanese studios are dead lol. U
Until Switch came and took that momentum with Octopath and others.

Sony cant improve in Japan as long as they dont have an offline handheld. They can release a Japanese style game every month and would only help half the issue.
They need an offline handheld and then they would also need to release Japanese favoured titles like DQ, Monster Hunter, Momotaro Dentetsu, Taiko no Tatsujin and more evrery month like the PS2, PS1.

Switch is giving Japanese gamers niche and the titles they want every month on handheld. PS doesnt have the Nintendo titles that Japan loves but they have enough to improve there hardware and software numbers in Japan if they put in actual effort for 2-3 years, every month.

Sony has always had this weakness, they target certain audiences without a full on plan or they just some with a half assed effort.
Which expert thought PSVR2 would be a good idea without any actual long term effort from 1st party? Same as Vita, PSVR1.
