Nice to see software up 20% YoY and Astro up there. PS5 had an understandable decrease after having passed its sales peak year as normal in the sales cycle of any console, but still keeps a huge distance compared to the other ones, specially Xbox.

They should be packing Asto Bot in with every PS5... Horizon got that benefit and it makes much more sense with Astro.

Edit: just adding to this... Especially coming up to Christmas and with families in mind, it makes even more sense.
PS5 + Astro Bot optional bundle, having the option of buying the console alone = yes
Astro Bot bundled for free in any new console = no

They already threw a lot of money to the garbage bin with the team before with games that were money pits, games that didn't sell a shit, games that got cancelled and games they gave away.

This time they should let the studio make money. It they make money will be more likely that Sony will want to grow the studio. If they keep giving away for free their stuff Sony may end wanting to shut it down.

As of now, Astro Bot seems to be on track to become the best selling internally developed Team Asobi/Japan Studio/Sony Computer Entertainment Japan ever. So it would be good for them to allow them to do so, and to don't include it too early in PS+ or free with the console.

That's like us saying there's nothing to play on Steam because Valve didn't release a new Half-life or Counterstrike since 1995. We should start saying it because it's true.
This is not true at all. Valve released many games since 1995, including multiple Half-Life and Counter-Strike games https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Valve_games

To increase the install base maximally before then, so they can have optimal profits from software sales.

Why let hardware sit on shelves?
Hardware isn't sitting on shelves, they are market leaders outselling Xbox almost 10:1.

They have many big sellers coming soon like GTA6, plus soon some other top sellers will be next gen only. Next year we may end seeing MS putting some of their key games like Gears or Halo on PS, which I assume will further kill the Xbox hardware. All these things combined will help them continue having great sales.

They have to be careful with their profitability to make sure they can continue having some big game tanking or getting cancelled from time to time without causing any issue, plus also "saving money" for when late next year they sell their banks division and pretty likely then they go back to continue with acquisitions, maybe early 2026.

Sure, a price cut would help, in different areas, but their priority as of now is to improve profitability in the short term and control in some way the loses generated per hardware unit sold.

Astro Bot desperately needs a second ad campaign post GOTY.

If it wins GOTY and gets its ad campaign it might hit more serious numbers, otherwise, it will be lucky to hit 7 million units.

You say that like it's a bad thing. This is a high-polished AA game, but still a AA game all the same. It has a budget under $100 million, including marketing. We can infer that much. It's also a new IP to the vast majority, as they probably didn't play the PSVR game and might've even skipped Astro's Playroom since they had other games to play around launch or whatever.

Even if it "only" does 5 million, that's still great for a AA game that's basically a new IP in a genre completely dominated by Mario & Sonic.

When you hear things and assume that they're negative, you should re-evaluate how you consume information.

5 million is great for a game like this, but as GOTY it has potential to hit higher levels than that.

I think this game by itself suggests that Sony should release a new PS5 SKU based on 5nm and PSSR to shoot for an entry level PS5 at closer to 300 dollars. If they're going to keep the PS5 around for another 4 years, they need to look for cost cutting opportunities.
