Happy to see PS doing well in Japan, and I hope both FFVI Rebirth and FFXVI are considered to be financially successful by both SE and Sony.

Also, I hope that the rumored PS4 compatible PlayStation handheld is legit. Would be great for PlayStation in Japan and other Japanese third parties who put their games on PlayStation.

Bragging? Nah, I was stating facts. And those are not mutually exclusive! You call it a failure, yet its a relatively niche game that sold over 1m units in its first week! So it can never be considered a failure by any objective metric. Even if you try to isolate it to JP sales, 70k first week is a success! You're trying to label a very successful game as a failure, so if anyone is bored here, its you. I'm just here to correct you and bring facts, as I normally do.

It actually did worst than previous game by 20%.
You're wrong. This is very good, Versus came out in the middle of the pandemic and only sold 15k more with a larger install base and less competition 😐 So yes, GBF Relink did great. Relink came out in the same time as Persona 3 Reload and Yakuza Infinite Wealth. 2 much bigger JRPGs and it still performed well, 70k+ first week Japan and 1m+ worldwide, these are objectively great numbers.

IMO it is bad.
The install base is way bigger for the sequel than it was to Versus.
Any company will say to you it is bad.

Any sequel that have a drop in sales in a region put a yellow flag why it happened.

No company believes it will sells less.

That doesn’t change of course that outside Japan it did better than previous.

They'll rather wait till they get a PS5 to buy crossgen games. This is shown by almost every crossgen game selling 90% or better on PS5 than ps4. A relatively niche jrpg coming off of a relatively niche fighting game selling 70k first week is a failure? Tekken 8, a much bigger IP, only did 20k 😂 and it came right after P3 Reload, another much bigger game which only did 90k. This man just loves to hate!!

Granblue Fantasy is not really Niche in Japan or in parts of Asia, it is a multi billion generating Mobile IP.
Tekken 8 isn't really a useful comparison, that series has been dead in Japan for a long long time, as is the case with pretty much all other Fighting Game Series not called Street Fighter(and even then, it's not selling a lot on PS).


Point of Comparison for Granblue Fantasy compared to other JRPGs releasing around the same time are the better data points.

As we can see GBF did considerally worse than LaD, and even was outdone by P3R which is a remake.
I don't think it's a failure, but nor is it really a big success in Japan on PS5.
It's just okay when we consider software sales of PS5 in general within the region.
GBF was outperformed even worse in EU/NA, but that's to be expected, LaD and Persona have been growing the brand globally compared to Granblue which has remained a JP/China centric with a splash of other Asian countries.

GBF is actually one of the few games that has benefited tremendously from a PC version due to the IP being very popular in China, it would've struggled to get 1M copies worlwide without the PC version.

If we look at the reviews breakdown by language, the numbers are very very Chinese language speaking.
If you add both Chinese language(Simple/Traditional) it's over 60% of reviews in Chinese, this is pretty rare for most releases.

IMO it is bad.
Any company will say to you it is bad.
Any sequel that have a drop in sales in a region put a yellow flag why it happened.

I can assure you that many many Japanese publishers are expecting huge software drops in Japan due to the sales trend in the region, pretty much every franchise has cratered even accounting for the rise of digital.
PS3 ----> PS4 ---> PS5 are seeing software drops for pretty much all games, and the trend is not going to reverse anytime soon, it's just the reality of the market.
Third party publishers either need a Switch version if they want to see increased local sales or they're just going to have to multiplatform with competent PC ports if they want to grow worldwide sales.

The PS4 is still selling in Japan and the PS4 is still doing at least 35 - 40% of 3rd party games sales in Japan when simultaneously released with a PS5 version. Never has it taken a Sony console so long in Japan to get legacy players to move on.

The game didn't do well no matter how much mumble jumble you attempt to conjure.

So I'll simply stop replying to you now as you rarely come with any lick of substantial sensible argument.

It is actually a sequel to mobile game launched in 2014.
It is not original.

The original was downloaded over 25 million times in Japan.
Between 2017 and 2018 the game did $500 million in sales… since 2014 it already crossed $1 billion in sales.

As shown by my previous post, this is simply not the case in Japan, the country has been an extreme outlier in this category, compared to the rest of the world.

I just posted BGF/P3R/LaD 8 data and it clearly shows that many many players are buying the PS4 version.

This further illustrates the issue of PS5 software in Japan, it's very low for it's supposed installbase(scalping?) and the reticence of Japanese PS4 owners to buy a PS5 due to the pretty high price of the console(in Yen).

that is why I said RELATIVELY niche, because I know the mobile game is big, but that rarely ever translates into the console space. Vast majority of console gamers don't even know that GB is a mobile game. Most only know of the fighting game, and fighting games are niche by nature. So yes GBF Relink was always a relatively niche title as I stated earlier, especially compared to the likes of Yakuza and Persona, even if it is a remake, it's still one of the most known JRPG franchises. Coming out after 2 100+ hour JPRGs and still selling as well as it did is an objective success anyway you look at it! I bought GBF Relink day 1 and still haven't touched it because I was playing Infinite Wealth, if I didn't have the discretionary income, then I would've never bought it and just held off until I had more free time. But I wanted to support the game.

This goes back to my original comment, P3R and Yakuza sold as well as they did on PS4 because they're much bigger IP, GBF doesn't have that cachet in the console space. Relink will have longer legs on PS5 than other JP releases.

In Japan and especially in China a lot of people would know the Mobile game wayyy before they even know of the fighting game, they would've seen the ads from Cygames for years at this point.

It certainly will, in large part due to the fact that it will have post launch content unlike singleplayer JRPGs.
In fact, maybe you are aware(or not) but patch content for 1.1.0 that is coming out on March 14th is available to check out.
But at he end of the day, like most JRPGS, sales legs ratio to launch will still be fairly minimal.

None of this refutes my points, the game was a success in Japan and worldwide. You saying it did "just ok" means you expected more...which idk why one would given all the factors it had against it, but we can agree to disagree.

Let's bring it back in here. Every single disagreement doesn't have to be bickering back and forth. The same way everything doesn't have to sell more than it did last time to be a success or the same way a success lsnt always dictated on whether it sold as much or close to as it did previously. Successes for games are based on budgets, revenue and profits in the end of it all. That determines whether a game overall was successful.
