FROMSOFTWARE is now the sole owner of Elden ring IP, thanks to Sony and Tencent investments to help the developer self-publish.

So how did this work? They paid Namco to buy it off them? Or there was some agreement before?

Why wouldnt they have it from the start, Im sure Miyazaki doesnt want to lose anymore IP’s. They own Sekiro though. Dark Souls is Namco’s, Demons Souls and Bloodborne belong to Sony

Sony should have bought them like yesterday.
But they re too stupid for that. Rather spend 4 billion on fkin Bungie or some ancient album.

I don't think they hit those numbers again. Something off with this games success imo. Very industry plant esq vibes. Same with boulder gate.

Media really went out their way to promote pretty average games IMO.
The only reason Elden Ring did crazy numbers from the jump was because it got a 97 on MC & people where like “no way this game is this good” but if you look at the reviews when the game released it had like 30 reviews when it had 97 strangely for some reason not many review site review it till later on but Elden Ring got its success in the first month. Sales wise Elden Ring stuck at 15 million sales from the last numbers reported not much growth long term still good anyways for a souls game

It be interesting to see how there next game sales fromsoft has been earning prestige over the years

Stop with the nonsense, Metacritic score doesn't matter nearly as much as you think.

Since Demon Souls localization every soulsborne game after was increasing in sales whether exclusive or not. Elden was going to sell more like Souls 3 bcus it was in multiple consoles.

BG3 is great and the industry was starved for a great RPG. Biowares track record is shot and Bethesda hadnt dropped a RPG since like 2015. The outer worlds released in like 2019 (and was just ok but thats just me).

So how did this work? They paid Namco to buy it off them?
  1. Bandai Namco funds the new IP, Bandai Namco gets the IP rights
  2. It becomes a big hit and FromSoft/Kadokawa make a lot of money, Bandai Namco too
  3. Kadokawa and Sony sign a deal where Sony will help them bring their game and anime IPs to the rest of the world and Kadokawa gives 2% of itself to Sony
  4. Sony invests in (gives money to) FromSoft acquiring 10% of the company
  5. Kadokawa/FromSoft buys the IP rights from Bandai Namco (I assume paying a ton of money for it)
  6. Kadokawa/Fromsoft now can self publish the game/sequels/spinoffs or movie/anime/tv show/manga adaptations themselves or with another publisher, without needing approval or paying anything to Bandai Namco. Other than continue selling the already published game and its already signed DLCs, Bandai Namco can't use the IP without FromSoft permission
  7. Remember who will help Kadokawa/FromSoft push their IPs worldwide (see point 3)
