I’m not sure what are you saying because in Elden Ring the animation is way longer and pauses a lot after you hit the button…
I'm not sure what you mean by pauses a lot. I'm talking the "matrix-style" pausing to emphasis a good move.

And about your same button… man Elden Ring is exactly that… you have two buttons attacks so everything you will do is R1/L1 or R2/L2 buttons smashing.
What I mean by that is you have to execute a series of button presses in order to get ONE special move out. Of course ER has buttons you need to press but it doesn't support special moves other than the LB+RB for whatever weapon type you have in your hands. Since ER has a nearly 1:1 button to move, you have to make up your own combos - which ER will punish you for.

See why people can’t understand you… you use double standards… the issue in a game is not a issue in the other because you choose one side is good and the other side is bad.
You completely misunderstand what I'm conveying and it's your sensitivity to it being me making the comment that blocks your understanding of what I'm complaining about. Let me put it another way, GoW has a different play style than FROM games. I prefer FROM games style of combat because they are better for me.

“Fun” is subjective and nearly impossible to define by a metric I’d say.

And then there’s layers of depth and complexity, and rule sets which more sweats will prefer.

I mean, Elder Ring and GoW are of the highest pedigree imaginable for action games. It doesn’t get bigger or better anywhere else right now.

There are technical preferences right but what I’m getting at is…

Winning a boss fight in a souls game is a massive accomplishment. You throw your hands into the air and praise the sun right there on the couch when it happens.

God of War is like Burnout 3. You’re playing, and every button command and movement is some bombastic set piece and you may just literally let a “haha” out more than a handful of times at the experience of just punching a dude.

With that said, I’m not knocking any depth or complexity to god of war. I think it has it all and might prefer it over Bloodborne (Bloodborne is in my top 5 games ever period).

I tried hunting down a pre release copy yesterday. No luck. I don’t want physical anyway but the hype is huge.

Also, I would indeed notch up the difficulty a bit even on first playthru. I can’t imagine button mashing being rewarded nor do I remember it being.
Yup, I'm tempted of raising the difficulty one notch... The old god of war games offered a level of difficulty I likes on normal, but 2018 was strange, the main game almost feels like a push over if you area but careful and use the boy a lot (so prioritize his upgrades). However, the Valkyries and other stuff of that kind was pretty hard, too much for my taste.

Meta.

124 positive reviews.
46 perfect scores.
12 scores below 90.

Universally acclaimed!

What is really puzzling is how difficult it is to get over 95 or so these days..... it seems that 97+ is only allowed for Mario and Zelda these days and it sends a really bad message IMO.

Elden ring was a 97, and to me is not a 97. Technically it had a lot of performance issues, no game breaking bugs, but needed some work post launch. To me thats where the inconsistency's seem to be when looking at metacritic and reviews in general.

Horizon:FW should be a 90. But I get that beginning pacing and the graphical glitches not performance mind you, but weird graphical bugs that were very common in first couple weeks of its release is what soured its score.

But yet we have elden ring that has issues with FPS, and on PC just running without stutters or weird desync issues.

Elden Ring was 96 if I’m not wrong.
97-98 are mostly Zelda, Mario, GTA, etc.

The game is going to be a masterpiece for sure.
What I have noticed for a long time now is that these games usually feel better on the second playthrough (when the dust has settled).

That has been the case for GoW 3, uncharted 2, 3, TloU 1, 2, GoW 2018... So many more.

GoW Ragnarok on PS5 is an improvement over GoW on PC Ultra.

Nice comparison!

Environment : GoWR has a lot more going on from layered texturing and more detailed displacement mapping. And I love the collisions on the tree branches.
Models : They are very close. I actually prefer the 2018 one compared to 2022
Lighting : Looks similar
FX : GoWR has much better particles/smoke than 2018 (they still need work on water.)

Agreed on all. But I like the "new" skin shader (I know its not), their skin looks a bit more realistic now.

Agree. I just wish they would have added more specular contribution to it. I'm glad it's an actual SSS shader in the in-game hero. 2018 wasn't using SSS (or a fake version of one).

I'll add more thoughts when I play, videos don't really translate 4k gameplay with all the compression.

Lighting stood out to me as the big improvement there, even if it's just the artistic implementation. Felt it was the biggest visual weakness in 2018 particularly outdoor areas

What helps other games over PS games to get 95, 96, 97 etc...is that much fewer reviewers review them, so if a non-PS game is acclaimed the law of averages is on it's side. You realize that every PS exclusive has over 100 reviews easily, whilst XBOX exclusives or even multiplats not so much. It seems every Xbox outlet, every biased xbox troll is eager to review PS games. They even purchase them to make sure a few troll reviews get in. I'm sure Stevivor is itching to 1up IGN Korea.

Even older Nintendo games and those games still sitting at the top of overall meta charts only got averaged out of 15-25 reviews...

Definitely an artistic implementation as none of the video comparisons were under the same lighting conditions. I agree that they had way too much GI probe lighting in the 2018 version blowing out image.
