I don't play CoD, but how long before all multiplayer games start doing this.
Why the heavy outrage? Yes privacy is at stake, but we gave all that up for countless 2 factor authentication checks already. At the end of the day if we as gamers want to reduce cheating, we need to catchup with the rest of the industry.

Make an exception to that, not wholesale elimination. Cheaters creating new accounts will still have to outlay time and money with that so will still help.
Not necessary on console at all. But you cant create unlimited accounts on PC for the one install?
This does not prevent cheating. You can get a pay as you go card in plenty of countries for as little as 2.5 quid. It doesn't deter piracy. And IMO, knowing how companies operate, this has nothing to do with deterring piracy but rather to create very handy databases they can sell to marketing companies.
You can create unlimited accounts on console. You just burn a username/gamer tag each time.
Paying full price as a paywall to multiplayer is as effective and account verification.
So Warzone 2 sure. Some games only ask for secure accounts in ranked modes. Def not for 70$ Modern Warfare 22.
People want all multiplayer games to be free. A phone number is a fair trade off.
The idea that it’s some big brother shit is a bit… too late? Not a big deal? It’s just a phone number. If you really cared that much you wouldn’t have so many dating apps on your phones…. Not like we won’t get scammers callin anyway.
There is a contingent of players that want to justify their ability to cheat and Hack and pirate. These gamers are garbage. A good amount of the blowback is from low skill garbage like that. Don’t be mistaken.

Any anti-piracy system that can be circumvented by spending a couple of quid is not by definition an anti-piracy system, it's an annoyance system for all your users.
Consoles are not devoid of cheaters. Not in any form. Whether it’s lag switching, getting booted or controller enabled cheats.
The nature of f2p amplifies the issue because there’s less concern about losing an account that costs you nothing in practice.
F2p has severe issues. Phone verification can work, requiring the purchase of a current season pass is another. Basically anything that says you are willing to pay money. The most effect form against piracy is and forever will be … $$$ upon entry.
Consoles are better. pS5 being best since you cannot use controller hardware add on it (yet). Crossplay is best off with pc when an option (pc is a cesspool of dirty cheaters).
What about cheating? Not related? As in, getting banned when cheating will require a new phone number - a deterrent
Another two quid, not a deterrent. People pay for professional cheats, they won't be deterred by a phone number.
