Closer to Home is a 2D indie. It's somewhat flawed because there could be more gameplay to it. I like the atmosphere a lot though. It is thoroughly depressing and bizarre with a lot of creepy imagery and surreal stuff. Very angsty with lots of death themes. Most messed up bit is toward the end you have to stab yourself to death many many times in order to progress.

I recently watched a youtuber play it and it seemed so tame, but for its time definitely gory and "controversial".

Yeah for it's time, with all the different ways on how to kill people and the reason for the killing, really caused an uproar. Any Mortal Kombat game released since then has been more brutal.
