Stock story that is superbly told and explored = excellent story
Innovative and well crafted story that's told as if written by a toddler = terrible story

That's how I see it myself.
Yep. ND just does an amazing job at putting it all together like very few do. Dialogue and voice acting, probably only matched by Rockstar to some extent. Facial animations and animations, graphics, action scenes. Its how they put it all together that makes it special and something no1 else has been able to do like them

God of War 2018/ Ragnarok and RDR 2 are the only ones who are in the same league

Pacing issues have existed before.

Some Metal Gear Solid games have them too.

Loved MGS1 and MGS3. Didn’t like 2 and 4.

The worst game has got to be Xenogears.
I just never heard so much complaining about it till U4. Its kinda minor to me. I mean FF6 get praised as one of the best games ever and rightfully so, but fuck me did that game drag on at the end. But most JRPGs do.

MGS I would hear complaints like, too much dialogie, stoppping and starting, cut scenes etc. Meh, give it to me in my veins, I love Kojima games lol.

I loved the MGS’s. MGS4 was just too short and not enough MGS gameplay for me. MGS2… I enjoyed but was disappointed Solid Snake was only at the start.

When it comes to minor stuff, to me in games I dont see it. Or I can overlook it if I like other aspects of it.

But with TV series… Hell give me The Wire seasons 1-3 over Breaking bad any day. Or Rome over Spartacus. I can tell the quality in TV or animes. But games, just make it good for me to play and make some effort for the rest

Completely disagree.
Games like Pokemon and Zelda for example have more lore and complexity than Sony games.
Lol
On the other hand, Sony games lack lore and complexity because they are Hollywood Blockbusters.
Lol
To put it simply cause Sony games have actual storylines they lack lore/complexity cause you can’t make shit up.
Lol

That they have great lore when in reality they have average storylines and the rest is the brainchild of gamers imaginations.

That made up bullshit/Filling plot holes = Lore
Fanfics and fan assumptions is not the same than lore.

Lore is the background information about the characters, world, locations, meaningful events, factions, etc. of a game.

Exactly.
Bloodborne character, wondering into a plagued curse land, uncovering what has and is happening, going deeper. And ending the nightmare, what else do people want lol. Its just there style of story telling, which is fine but to say it has no story… I dont get it, I love it
There is story and lore if you are willing to dig for hours outside the game itself and a ton of those are fan interpretations. To me that is lazy. They provide a skeleton and leave it to the fans to interpret it and do deep dives and put on the meat, similar to what TaleWorld does with their Mount and Blade series ( except in their game it is game mechanics wise).

Yes I believe the term appeared after Uncharted 4.

Pacing issues - Drags on/Gets boring in segments.

That’s the way I look at it.

Those flashback parts in UC4 were boring.

Same with all the Aquarium, Guitar playing and even the final beach part in TLOU2.

GOWR also had issues with the Atreus parts. Him visiting that Grandma and the Mask parts.

I am going to take the last of us as an example here.

Going to get some pushback on this, I think, sorry @Satoru.

Here goes, eek, takes a massive gulp of Air.

I think the last of us two is a mediocre story, I actually find it run of the mill, nothing special or to get excited about.
What i do find incredible however with games like the last of us, is with there inner personal stories between characters.

The developing bonds between characters like Joel and Ellie, Riely and Ellie from the Dlc, (correct me if i got the first girls name wrong there please.)

Even the story form the last of us part 2,(the series) i know there was a lot of pushback from people on having two gay characters in it, but if you leave that aside, the inner personal story telling between those two in that episode was superbly told.

If you can hit certain emotional standpoints in a game, they are doing something well.

For example i felt nothing for Joel when he died, but Arthur Morgan from Red dead redemption, i really connected with that character and was genuinely sad, maybe upset when he died.

In context to the story, his character was unimportant to me, as i found the games story extremely long and sometimes really tedious. But his personal experience, his emotional state and how he acted towards other people really made me like him

Sorry, I'm just rambling a bit, and my spell checker is not working today.

Hope some of this makes sense.

Peace
xxxxx
I was also sad about Arthur loved the character lol

Thats fine if you find it lazy, some people love it. To me its kind of the opposite of lazy because everything has to be so particular and accurate and cant be done without reason, from the level designs that tell a story, where and what certain NPC’s and enemies do. Every item and weapon, where those items are places, alot of the locations etc. It has to make sense and takes time and effort to come up with that and design it. And the history of the characters too. It cant just be placed randomly and anywhere, which is quite difficult.

For example, DMC they can put any bad guy/enemy in any environment and the level can look like whatever, it wont matter. The cut scene will tell the story.
When they make something like Bloodborne, alot of it has to be designed on purpose to say what could of happened here, from the characters, architecture, Bosses, even there move sets, NPCs, items etc. It tells the story if your willing to look.

You dont need to dig outside of the game for it, its all in the game. Its just some people cant be bothered to look into it lol, which is fine. Its not for everyone. But its all in there, from the environment, items, scenes, NPC’s etc.

Its not like the fans are making stuff up, they are pieces it together. Which you can do all yourself.
Instead of being told all in cutscenes or conversations or simple explanation texts. Theres some conflicting ideas with fans but thats the same with so many games/animes and books, from MGS, Berserk and so on.

I cant even remember the flashbacks in U4.
I can understand that it drags for you, that makes sense. My body and mind has been conditioned by RPGs, J-W-CRPGs and animes lol.

I felt like the more time I was getting in U4, TLOU, God of War I enjoyed, because everything was done so well, from voice acting, action, combat, graphics. Even the damn squirrels in GOWR, I enjoyed it.

Souls games has barely any story.
Lore is not game's story.

The idea that any video game has actual "complex" stories is a joke. That said, Nintendo franchises tend to have "more lore" simply due to how many titles are in all of them.

This has to be one of the worst post ever written in this forum.

So bad you should ask for yourself to be perma banned.

I love how From Software games offend people that just don't get it and likely never will, they freak out if there is any difficulty as if it's a personal attack to their gamer identity, if the story isn't delivered in a conventional manner it's also seen as a personal attack to their intelligence.
The idea that any video game has actual "complex" stories is a joke.
Why?

Never even played it, not my cup of tea I dont wanna dedicate hours daily being stuck at a section to "git gud". Maybe if I was still in school and had time. Before you say how can I know that it has no story if I never played it, the same way I know Gran Turismo does not have any, even though I never played that game either. It just does not.
