I call this the official end of Sony's phase 1 aquistions, which were long in the making - well before micorsoft's dangerous and volatile aggression (so yeah, it's true Bungie was not a response to micorsoft)
Yes, this acquisition started before the first talks between MS and Activision Blizzard King. Bungie maybe was decided later even if they already had a very close relationship since the start so maybe they already considered to buy/sell the studio if it progressed well since the start.
But get ready boys because now begins phase 2. Its coming! Let's go Sony!!
This is the phase of aquistions which will be a defensive response to micorsoft's consolidation attempts
People will be very happy with Sony's phase 2! Let's just say that: )
"The art of war" baby! Sony is a general preparing to hold the fort and defend in battle with their phase 2 strategy!
Here is what I'm expecting for Sony's phase 2 of aquistions (if you watch their latest earnings report Sony has upped their previous 18billion budget for aquistions to now 30billion for aquistions)
Sony phase 2 as follows:
Sqaure Enix (already sold off their western branch for Sony to be streamlined for Sony) All the people who felt Sony was ignoring Japan, boy oh boy will you be happy. Sony is coming back to Japan in a big new way with big new plans!
Capcom. The Capcom family only own 22%. Sony & Capcom share many of the same investors. It will make a merger or buy super easy and streamlined
Sony's big advantage against Microsoft is that Sony will end up with all the Japanese publishers which dominate gaming. FTC and American agencies have no jurisdiction or authority over Japanese companies buying Japanese companies in Japan.
Sony will make an offer to Kojima. They will honor contracts and let him finish his micorsoft game and thats it (think Deathloop and Ghostwire)
Emberlabs
And Deviation can become a target depending on well they do. It just shows you how far along Haven was that Sony could not afford to sit and wait. Because if everyone else found out what Haven was doing, you would have everyone trying to steal Haven from Sony when Sony funded them, so Sony made sure to get them asap
Well, I seriously think Sony doesn't give a fuck about MS acquisitions. SIE is performing better than any console maker ever did and are way ahead of MS at console harware active base, number of big exclusives released, sales of these exclusives, reviews and awards of these exclusives, game subs (not only having twice the subs, but also generating way more revenue and profit with it instead of being a money sink), having PSVR2, having the movies stuff...
And Sony isn't only performing great in all areas: they are in a growing trend in all areas, MS isn't affecting any of them. Excluding the chips shortages issues sales/demand indicate PS5 will again become the best selling ever console, sales and engagement are better than ever, their 1st party blockbusters sell better and win more awards than ever and with the extras of stuff like PC or the new PS+ will increase, they are growing their existing teams and acquiring new ones and plan to release more games than even before in console, PC and mobile, their PSVR2 support looks better than the PSVR1 one, Uncharted was a great start with their expansion of their IPs to movies/tv show/anime and plan to release many more, etc.
Sony is ahead of MS, and improving in all areas will make MS impossible to compete against them. MS can't buy anyone bigger than Activision Blizzard. And well, most Mojang, Bethesda and Activision Blizzard King will continue being released on PS even if (according to the Xbox CFO in the case of Bethesda) some of them after a timed exclusive.
So I think SIE will continue with their current acquisitions strategy:
- Acquire top tier devs who excel in top selling genres/game types/tech where existing 1st party don't excel (Bungie, Haven, Firesprite, Housemarque)
- Acquire top tier support teams specially who add more manpower that already worked with them (Valkyrie, Fabrik) or can help them bring their games to new markets like VR (Firesprite), PC ports or remakes (Bluepoint, Nixxes) or mobile (Lasengle)
- Acquire devs with experience creating top tier new IPs (Bungie, Haven, Bluepoint, Firesprite, Insomniac, Housemarque)
So that’s :
Destiny 2 (on going indefinitely)
Destiny Mobile (co developed in partnership w/ Netease)
Destiny Spin-off game for consoles and PC
And
MATTER (q4 2024 earliest but most likely 2025)
We get absolutely epic Destiny and Bungie leaks year after year for awhile now… and leaks that end up being 100% legit.
I’m hoping we get some more soon. I still think it’s Luke Smith leaking everything… because it’s an excellent hype method.
They mentioned to have plans to release "at least one" new IP before 2025, so maybe that spin-off is a new IP set in the Destiny universe. They also mentioned to be working to bring Destiny to Switch via (Google) cloud.
