@Evilms it won’t let me quote that post, but why isn’t Gravity Rush listed? Sony must hate that all that sales data is out there…..goes back almost 30 years 😳
Also missing are other old games Infamous 2, Killzone 1, Killzone Mercenary, Killzone 3, some sly racoon, shadow of the colossus, ico ...

Always wondered what Sly Cooper Thieves in Time sold lifetime. If there is a number for it, hit this post. Thanks.

Quick Rough Breakdown to easily compare a title considered undoubtedly successful versus one some argue against.

As of Feb 2022:
GOW 4 - 21m Units - 597m USD
$28.43 PPU

TLOU2 - 10.3m Units - 447m USD
$43.4 PPU

Shows GOW 4 was bundled like crazy hence the lower PPU. Or sold at low price as well but people did claim that about TLOU2. Wrongly now it seems.

Likely Part 2 is now ahead in Net Sales USD and only behind in Unit sales a lot of which would be due to the millions of bundles it didn't get. I'd now estimate with Part 2s strong 2022 and early 2023 it's in an around 15 million units but that's a pure guess of course.

A lesson learnt for everyone anyway. Unit sales never told near the full story.

We are looking at some games having a bundle percentage over 20%.
This is true, for example, Luigi's Mansion 3 made more money then TLOU PS4 despite selling less in units because of high average price per unit.

TLoU2 is the greatest loser here.

It barely sold any more than TLoU1 on the PS4, which was by itself a double dip from the PS3 version that got 8.4 million sales. It definitely cost a lot more to make than Ghost of Tsushima which got almost as much revenue, and I bet it cost more than God of War 2018 which sold twice as much.

10 million sales sounds like a lot, but for a game that probably had Sony's largest ever production and marketing budget and then went on to win all of that year's awards, sounds like it might have barely made any money so far.
Thank god the TV series was so good, though.

Returnal's sales are also quite disappointing, but it just goes to show how badly Housemarque will have to pivot away from the super hard roguelike genre if they ever want to make more money and grow.

That's simply not true though. Read into the numbers. Look at the Net Sales and actual cash involved.

Unit sales is a misleading number when some games are given away and bundled at over 20%.

Also 10 mil was in Feb 2022. Lookin at these charts it's a reasonable assumption that Part 2 is now the 2nd most successful Sony PS4 game in terms of Net Sales.

And if we are really conservative with our sales estimates for 2022 and 2023 it's at worst 3rd but very close to GOW 4.

This data actually shows Part 2 tracking extremely well. Plus with the show it's going to continue to have good legs with massive sales spikes.

What?! The revenue numbers paint an even worse picture for the game after you compare it to Spider Man, GoW and even Ghost of Tsushima.

The game is 3.5 years old now, the 10 million mark came up over 2 years after release and by then it had been on sale multiple times. The "remaster" might be giving it some sales boost but I doubt it, considering it's a $10 upgrade from the PS4 version so revenue per sale will be much smaller.

Almost half the total sales in 2022 had been pre-orders. Those are pure goodwill sales from fans of the first game. The word of mouth effect on the game was pretty bad and proof of that is the very mediocre metacritic user score even after metacritic engaged in censoring negative reviews.

This was definitely Sony's most expensive game to date. Marketing around it was nothing short of ridiculous, it was everywhere.

I wonder if Kojima will be able to survive without Sony's money.
PC seems to have saved Death Stranding from being a total flop, so I'm sure OD will do well enough there. It will of course bomb on Xbox unless it has a gamepass deal.

Sony should've been chasing Quantic Dream down or even making media molecule develop a new little big planet, as they sold more.

Selling 5M copies on PS is now a flop? Fuckin hell standards. Ratchet was profitable with fewer sales, and insomniac is bigger than KojiPro.

Like pretty much everything, whether or not a game is a "flop" is determined by sales expectations, production and marketing costs.

The Marvels was a flop despite grossing $205M worldwide whereas The Hitman's Bodyguard was a success with a lower $183M.
Because The Marvels cost $275M to produce with usually a similar amount thrown to marketing, whereas the Hitman's Bodyguard cost $70M to make.

So yes, a game that sells 5M copies can be a flop. Probably most of Sony's big AAA 1st party games would be flops had they sold 5M copies.
However, take a game like Sea of the Stars and the devs will probably be super happy if it sells 500k copies.

Ratchet sold not even 3M copies. It wasn't a flop.

Death stranding, for such a weird game, and being the first of its IP, sold almost as much as Metal Gear Solid 2 on PlayStation alone.

I don't think that Xbox list is fully accurate since it's missing GTA V which sold a bit over 10 million.

Surprised to not see Forza Horizon 3 up there, it seemed to have sold well back in the day.

Over 10 million are prob on xbox 360 ( gta5 came to 360 first)

Game sales on xbox 360 in general are much bigger than xbox one

Those are just xbox one list

That list also show gran turismo absolutely dwarf forza

Those 10 million numbers are prob xbox 360 or combined 360 + one numbers ( gta 5 released on 360 and one)

Do you have any data

That support gta5 sold over 10 million on xbox one (specifically on xbox one platform alone in this case) would like to be proven wrong

GTA V sold over 22 million on 360 and close to 30 million on PS3.

By the end of 2013, GTA V had sold over 32 million on both those platforms alone.

Not what i mean

What i asked is that do you have any link or data that support gta 5 sold over 10 million copy on xbox one

( on xbox one platform only)

From 22 to 32 could be all time sales on ps3 under specific amount of time latter (22 million on release and 32 million at the end of 2013)

Like bloodborne we previously only know it sold 2 million until latter we got to know it hit 7 million

TLOU2 pissed of the conservative gaf type crowd, cost the game millions of sales for being too woke. Basically all they needed to do was make Abby's character fimenim and attractive. However, this kind of game is great for Sony's DEI rating so it's worth it and 10 million sales is still pretty good.

The level of effort in that post is staggering, rivalled only by the level of wrongness and faulty “thinking” on display in it.
