I wonder what the endgame is for Sony with the esports expansion.
The eSports market grows a lot every year. PlayStation has a long tradition supporting different tournaments or eSports friendly games, mostly 3rd party. I remember the case of Street Fighter V, where in that deal Sony not only funded part of the development or the porting and publishing of Ultra SFIV to PS4, but they also did put half a million dollar for the Capcom Pro Tour prizes, and a year or two later did put half a million more.
They also got the exclusivity of many other eSports friendly fighting games like the recent ones Guilty Gear Strive or DnF Duel, and that ended on PS becoming the standard platform where even the multiplatform games are played both in tournaments and by pro players. So they sell consoles not only to the players, but also to the tournament organizers, associations, teams, etc.
They also did put some extra effort on eSports for Gran Turismo. I don't follow about FIFA or different other non MOBA/FPS eSports like Rocket League but I'd bet many of them are also played on PS.
In addition to be the sponsor in many eSport events, Sony also organizes a ton of online tournaments with prize of many games via PlayStation Tournaments, so I think this acquisition is related to make that experience better.
I assume multiplayer and eSports grow more and more, and Sony wants to position themselves better there. There's a lot of key Rainbow Six Siege staff at Haven or a few in Guerrilla or even at Deviation or Firewalk, where they also have people who worked in stuff like CoD, Apex Legends etc.
I think a few of the upcoming Sony games will have a more eSports friendly focus, and also some upcoming publisher/dev acquisition, particularly a fighting game related one. But more important than that, I think they want to be more important in eSports to sell more consoles and games on them, even if 3rd party.
The better positioned Sony is in eSports today, will be better for them once eSports grow even more. As an example, in a few years fighting game eSports will skyrocket thanks to SF6 fixing the SFV issues had at launch and being multi, and also because League of Legends will release its fighting game (where the EVO/GGPO creators are working right now btw).
