We all expected an acquisition.... but not this one!

Makes sense though.

Sony's really making a big push into esports between this, co-owning EVO, the IZONE product line of monitors & headphones, seemingly having marketing rights to games like SF6 (exclusive beta access in August, etc.), and who knows what else.

I kind of wouldn't be surprised if they make a go at Arc System Works after all, or at least co-fund a game with them as a PS5 console exclusive. Majority of Arc's fanbase are on PlayStation & PC platforms at this point anyway.

What did they just acquire?

What's the difference between this and the one acquired by Microsoft?

Microsoft acquired Smash GG.

I wonder what the endgame is for Sony with the esports expansion.
The eSports market grows a lot every year. PlayStation has a long tradition supporting different tournaments or eSports friendly games, mostly 3rd party. I remember the case of Street Fighter V, where in that deal Sony not only funded part of the development or the porting and publishing of Ultra SFIV to PS4, but they also did put half a million dollar for the Capcom Pro Tour prizes, and a year or two later did put half a million more.

They also got the exclusivity of many other eSports friendly fighting games like the recent ones Guilty Gear Strive or DnF Duel, and that ended on PS becoming the standard platform where even the multiplatform games are played both in tournaments and by pro players. So they sell consoles not only to the players, but also to the tournament organizers, associations, teams, etc.

They also did put some extra effort on eSports for Gran Turismo. I don't follow about FIFA or different other non MOBA/FPS eSports like Rocket League but I'd bet many of them are also played on PS.

In addition to be the sponsor in many eSport events, Sony also organizes a ton of online tournaments with prize of many games via PlayStation Tournaments, so I think this acquisition is related to make that experience better.

I assume multiplayer and eSports grow more and more, and Sony wants to position themselves better there. There's a lot of key Rainbow Six Siege staff at Haven or a few in Guerrilla or even at Deviation or Firewalk, where they also have people who worked in stuff like CoD, Apex Legends etc.

I think a few of the upcoming Sony games will have a more eSports friendly focus, and also some upcoming publisher/dev acquisition, particularly a fighting game related one. But more important than that, I think they want to be more important in eSports to sell more consoles and games on them, even if 3rd party.

The better positioned Sony is in eSports today, will be better for them once eSports grow even more. As an example, in a few years fighting game eSports will skyrocket thanks to SF6 fixing the SFV issues had at launch and being multi, and also because League of Legends will release its fighting game (where the EVO/GGPO creators are working right now btw).

Sony really is going to be THE MAJOR leagues of gaming

Playstation wasn't kidding when they said that their equipment will be the NIKE of gaming/esports

Playstation is about to truly and officially be synonymous with gaming

And now we know the real reason why Sony has invested in GAAS games. To build up that future

Unbeknownst to 99% of people Sony was making nuclear 4D chess moves this whole time. Just quietly moving along the pieces and lines for a checkmate, and now that checkmate is almost here

Sony Electronics said that about their INZONE brand in regards to PC gaming monitors and headsets.

Had nothing to do with PlayStation.

The move into eSports is all about vision and execution. Does Sony have the right vision for what esports should be... and will their acquisitions grow along with the industry? Tune in 2-3 yrs from now to find out.

No dur. Hence why I said EUIPMENT. Youre being weirdly pendantic. Calm down.

That equipment can be used on Playstation if you want to get technical. Has nothing to do with "JUST SONY."

I can see it's about PUSHING PLAYSTATION on PC and taking over the PC market

Hence "we will be the Nike of gaming"

You have to know how to look AT THE LARGER picture, and not focus on wordplay or ninny winny little irrelevant factoids. It's about the MAIN points and main facts, THE FORREST, and not the trees

You understand that Sony Electronics and PlayStation (SIE) are different companies?

The INZONE brand has nothing to do with PlayStation.

Seems this deal was done or at least in negotiations a while ago. It shows you how many of these things are occurring at the same time. Like i said, i wouldn’t be surprised of Ember Lab and Deviation aren’t already under Sony.
