I'm blaming this squarely on that prick totoki or whatever his name is ! He's going to destroy playstation as we know it , hate on Jim Ryan all you want but playstation thrived under his leadership
No, it didn't. He fucked up most studios with GaaS push, while nickel and dimed on remasters and remakes of PS4 era. PR and Advertising was nothing but shit, he burned bridges with countless studios and cancelled most shows. He was booted and these lay off are direct consequences of his terrible tenure.

That’s not how any of this works. They aren’t firing people because the business is posting losses, they are firing people because shareholders want more money.
We all know those are the same thing in the eyes of those shareholders. More money being made but not going straight to their pockets is a loss to them.

This guy taking every and any opportunity to push against exclusives.

He is just incessant.

Sony will probably follow this path an take themselves out of the console business. PS5 is likely their last dominant generation, things are not moving in a positive direction.

Smart people will avoid building a digital library on PlayStation from now on. PC won.

What good is going to come out of this?

When I saw Totoki mentioning they had to address profitability and productivity I thought they were going to have a few firings to cut the fat, but I didn't expect 900 people (8% of their workforce, which was 11250 and now will be 10350) and the proposed closure of London Studio. Sad news.

GAS is done. Its over
No, MLB, GT7 and Helldivers 2 are very successful. As pretty likely Concord, Marathon or Fairgame$ and others will.

Over half of the total game revenue is generated by GaaS, and over half of the players are in GaaS titles. It would be retarded and suicidal to move away from GaaS. Sony must continue focused on their traditional non GaaS SP games but also growing in GaaS.

they either got rid of the one they made with the Korean studio or the one they were making inhouse

2 horizon GAS games is overkill
The Horizon MP game they have been working on since 2018 in Guerrilla (it's when they hired back the Killzone 2 MP and Rainbow 6 Siege director to work on it) may be the same that is developed by NC Soft, or may be one AAA focused on console (+maybe PC) and the other one a F2P focused on mobile (+ maybe PC).

Hermen going? I would bet...
There is no reason for this, PS Studios games produce way more revenue and profit now than they did before him, sell more than ever and earn more awards than ever. They have been doing very well, better than ever.

Layoffs have more to do with global post covid economics, tons of years of printing money for no reason causing big inflation and recesion, plus cutting ties in the west with Russia, rising oil prices and costs of hardware components and shipments for hardware, accesories and retail games. On top of that the dollar vs yen exchange keeps getting worse for a Japanese company like Sony.

That also caused sales to grow less than in previous recent years in PS even they grew and achieved new records in many places (in total gaming revenue adding console, PC and mobile remained flat for 2022 and 2023 for the first time of growth since the '80s).

That negatively impacted their profitability and have o reduce costs and maximize revenue, profitability and productivity to compensate. Costs related to recent acquisitions (retention bonuses, new office to help them grow, workforce increase, etc) also negatively impacted on their profitability in recent years, but accordin to Totoki will ease next fiscal year.

On top of all this, many investors are moving away from gaming to invest in other tech industries to invest in AI, where there's way more growth and potential growth.

Last financials showed something is wrong internally at the company.
They are taking actions to fix that.

Sadly but expected move.... it was more when it will happen :(
