Sony Interactive Entertainment has reportedly decided not to attend Gamescom 2024.

In recent years the company has opted to showcase its games through its own digital events, rather than host conferences or have a significant physical presence at major industry conventions like the expo in Cologne, Germany, which comes at a considerable expense.

Biggest gaming event in Europe and they don't go... Right.
Given the state of downloadable demos today, there's literally no reason for a big developer to attend one of these events nowadays. Anything you gain can be done on a world- or region-wide scale for far cheaper with a demo download.

For smaller devs it only makes sense if you can't otherwise get your game any media presence.

I swear there had better be a big showcase this year , if they think that weak state of play was good enough for us for the entire year they're deluded. I mean astro bot looks great but what else do we have to look forward to from playstation & before anyone mentions concord I'm not buying an online multiplayer only live service hero shooter at any price

Last decent Sony European event was probably Paris Game Week 2017 with the Ghost of Tsushima reveal. The good old days when being a PlayStation fan was exciting and all dooming belonged to Xbox.
The good old days when Sony even made a dedicated mini event for Gravity Rush 2, where they had a concert, revealed the date for GR2 and the remaster of GR1. Now they dont even bother with the showcases lol

It’s nothing new, but things are shaky. Xbox is dead due to shit exposure. Ps seems to be a fan.

They have nothing to show anyway.
They are obviously working on things but not ready to disclose. That would be fine except there should be a consistent pipeline where things are in a show ready state while the next batch is in progress and so on. Again, this is Xbox like behaviour - the inexplicable drought.

Pretty sure their GaaS aspirations derailed the tried and true path.

GaaS destroyed their development cycle. We know about ND and how GaaS is the reason we won't see their next game any time soon. We don't know about others and what happened behind the scene. But surely all their single player "tentpole " were or still working on GaaS that is probably not going/ (did not go) well.

Sony will be at Gamescom, as they go to a ton of events. But to make business behind the doors, without having a booth to showcase games to the public.

A few weeks ago Yoshida came to Spain to scout indies in a small indie games event. So obviously they'll be at Gamescom too.

For these year TLOU2R, Helldivers 2, MLB, Stellar Blade, Ronin, The Final Shape, Astro, Concord, Until Dawn, the PC ports, also Convallaria and Lost Soul Aside... sure, super drought. Like a desert. xD

Now seriously: Druckmann explained in the Grounded 2 documentary that to make these gameplay demos for marketing (even just for a trailer) take them a lot of time and resources. They prefer to make less and closer to release to optimize their resources and put less pressure on the devs (also helps to get less complains about changes or "downgrades").

If they don't go there, in the same way they also stopped going to E3 is because they think isn't worth it. It's a huge investment and they may have considered that is more profitable and effective to spend that marketing money instead in online marketing, and when makes sense putting a demo in the store.

I assume that if they have some trailer to share and don't have a State of Play around these days they'll give it to the Gamescom Doritos Night Live.

It will be seen online by more people than if they put it in a Gamescom both.

I feel like it was a combo between the Jim Ryan Regime's GaaS push which seems to be turning out as terribly as everyone predicted and their desire to shift focus exclusively to "blockbuster" games.
